Helps us enjoy the Bible the way she does

I've read a lot of books about Bible study written by experts--people who love to teach the Bible. But this book is clearly about someone who first loves the Bible, and then helps us love it more by what she teaches. I'm almost shocked at the blessings I received in every chapter. Chapter 11 on the application of God's Word to our lives has meant the most. Each chapter is accessible, real and practical. I don't think The Bible Study Handbook is as much about how to study the Bible as it is how to enjoy God's Word so that we are changed.

Great Resource: very readable, understandable, and practical

The Bible Study Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to an Essential Practice

I teach classes on how to study the Bible, so I'm always interested in reviewing tools and helps that might facilitate my teaching and communicate methods for effectively understanding the holy Scriptures. Consequently, it was with great excitement that I got my hands on Lindsay Olesberg's The Bible Study Handbook.

I took my first inductive Bible study class in 1988 and I have been collecting resources as well as taking additional how-to-study-the-Bible classes ever since. Needless to say, I have a nice collection of resources and methods at my disposal. It is with this awareness that I am confident to report that The Bible Study Handbook ranks among the highest rated of my resources for teaching the inductive methods of study. I will share my reasons.

Technical Specifics

The book weighs in just over two hundred fifty pages, not exhaustive, but it does stand up to its claim of being comprehensive. These pages are broken into three primary sections--Part 1: Foundations, Part 2: Building Blocks, and Part 3: Tool Box. In Foundations, Olesberg shares some of the influences and philosophy behind her passion and belief in the process of inductive Bible study. The next section of the book moves into the Building Blocks of inductive study method. Here, Olesberg introduces and teaches basic hermeneutical tools needed for accurate and effective interpretation of the Scriptures. Some of the major points in Building Blocks include contextual respect and understanding, which includes authorship (who wrote it, to whom was it written, why was it written) and narrative details (genre, cultural influences, socio-political, and economic circumstances to name a few). Moving to Part 3: Tool Box, is where Olesberg outlines helpful resources and practices necessary for effective Bible study.

The book is well annotated with a number of illustrations, tables, and graphs; all of these are very nice additions, especially for visual learners. Additionally, there is a collection of summary helps included in the appendices at the end of the book.

Things I really like

As I mentioned earlier in my review, I have been practicing and teaching inductive Bible study for many years. I can say with confidence that, for most people, Bible study is not easy and good Bible study is not quick. Inductive Bible study takes time, is detail oriented, requires good resources, and a very systematic approach. It is to these ends that I really appreciated the way that Lindsey Olesberg presented her methods and approach to Bible study. Her writing was reader friendly and her passion for Bible study was evident, which often becomes contagious for the reader. I also found an appreciation for the interactive exercises included at the end of each chapter. I think Olesberg made a practiced effort to include all of the primary learning styles in her handbook; at least as much as an author can accomplish this in a written form.

Final Thoughts

I don't have any serious criticism for The Bible Study Handbook. I wish the resources section in the appendices would have been a little more comprehensive, but some of that detail is covered in the Tool Box section of the book. I am always grateful for the wonderful resources that InterVarsity Press brings to the Christian community and I believe this contribution from Lindsey Olesberg is another great gift. I will be including it in my recommended resources to my students as well as returning to it again and again for my own benefit.

Read this book and embrace the joy of Inductive Bible Study!

I was so excited to hear that Lindsey Olesberg had written a book on Inductive Bible Study especially since I knew that she was in charge of the Bible expositions at Urbana and the Lausanne congress. These have been two of the most important conferences in the last century related to world evangelization. Reading this book made me realize why they had chosen her for this task. Lindsey absolutely loves the Bible and has dedicated her life to help university students discover the riches of God's word. The book is full of practical wisdom on how to dig deeper into the Bible. I'm currently teaching the Bible several times a week to youth and young adults and I'm so thankful that Lindsey has gifted me with this absolute treasure.

If the Bible is God's word then we must labor at finding the best way to understand it. Many great scholars agree that Inductive Bible Study is probably the most effective, rewarding and enjoyable ways to study the Bible. Since Lindsey Olesberg is one of the leading inductive Bible Study trainers of our generation I highly recommend that you get this book.

Great book, don't listen to the negative reviews.

It's not perfect but has tons of content. One of the reviews said it has misinformation because it classifies humans as "carnivores", but some recent studie shave classified humans as such "based on the percentage of meat in the typical human diet". Another negative review said the information is shallow and gave this example: "Some question do not even have answers like this one, 'why some animals are big and some are smalls?' the answer 'life happens everywhere it can on this amazing planet. life comes in every size, shape and color' ? what kind of answer is that?" Well, I think is a very good answer for the audience the book is intended for. Why are some animals big and others small? Because there are all kinds of animals in the world, some big and some small. I think it's a perfectly valid answer. If your kid needs more information you can teach him about evolution for an hour if you want. You have to understand the purpose of this book is having a lot of questions and a lot of content. If they start going deeper into answers then that means less content. I rather have more questions with simple answers than a few questions with 3 pages of an answer.

Finally, another reviewer seems to be confusing this book for something else and tries to show the "inaccuracies" but only comes off as a trying to display his knowledge of things. We get it, you know how to use wikipedia, guess what? This is a book for "KIDS", if you want to show off how much you know why don't you review a PHD book on physics?

This is a great book with tons of content and my kid loves it. It's not perfect, but that's why you're there as a parent.

What , why , how - these are the basic questions of a curious mind and for a curious little mind the big question is why.
National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Why is very much successful in answering this big question of a small word why.
This book is of a big size with a hard cover. Paper material is of very good quality so that when a child turns the page rapidly they do not tear off.
The book is made for a child in real sense. The answers to each why is given in such an easy manner that a child can easily get the answers to his/her why. An newer to a why question can be given in two ways 1) theoretically 2) practically -
This book adopts the way of giving practical answers in a very simple manner without losing any important theoretical fact. I really miss this book as my childhood book of knowledge. This book gives all the answers in such a nice and simple way that it has become my 3 year old daughter's most favorite friend and guide.
Each why question and its answers is described with beautiful colorful pictures so that knowledge becomes accurate and practical in real sense.
Not only the answers are given, in some sections there are also some exercises where a child can apply his knowledge which he.she has gained from the previous topics.

My daughter and we really love National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Why and after finishing this one we will be interested in buying other books of National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book .

I got this for my 2,5 years old and she likes it a lot. I like how good the pictures look, how bright the colors are. Some explanations aren't as good as they could be, but it's still a nice book to have.

Powerful spiritual work.........

I have been practicing and studying metaphysics and eastern spirituality for 30 years now, and have read numerous spiritual classics, including "Be Here Now" by Ram Dass; "The Way of the Peaceful Warrior" by Dan Millman; "Siddhartha" by Herman Hesse; and many more. However there is something different about this book. I have never read a spiritual book quite like it.

The book is written in a graceful, elegant style that could almost be considered prose at times; however at the same time, provides straight-forward, no-nonsense spiritual practices (and non-practices!) that have helped me to go beyond the spiritual impasse and nagging angst that I sometimes feel. The structure of the book is perfect for those who are time-limited but want to make daily progress on their spiritual path. Each short chapter can in itself provide great insight into spiritual growth, and spiritual pitfalls. Each chapter acts essentially as a stand-alone practice in itself.

But most of all, I love the gentle and compassionate way the author presents the material in this book. There is no subtle criticism here that you aren't doing your spiritual practices properly, or haven't achieved more in your spiritual life. You will be taught that you are totally acceptable just the way you are, and that you only need to remove the veil that prevents you from seeing it.

I highly recommend this book to those sincere spiritual practitioners who want to truly understand and embrace a more enlightened way of living that leads to Self-Realization.

A. Roy Horn Is The Real Deal

"Heroes, Sages and Madmen" is an important book for several reasons.

The first thing that comes to mind is how it serves as a warning for people to not get taken in and seduced by the plethora of pop "gurus" out there, who tap into people's desire to "pop" a pill and suddenly have enlightenment. Or who think they can just buy enlightenment.

Instead, the author gives us the path of self-enquiry, and gives us many different approaches and perspectives, making sure we find the one that makes sense based on our disposition, experience with spiritual knowledge - and readiness.

No matter how far we are on the spiritual path, we will find among the dozens of questions and answers something relevant for us. In fact, we're likely to find several that relate to our exact situation.

I give this book a strong recommendation!

An Excellent Book ...for Process Modeling Engineers

This is an excellent book that talks about various mathematical tools and its applications for Process Modeling. This start with the very basic funamentals and finishes at the highest level. This is a rare book that describes the theorotical fundamentals of mathematical Derivations in Chemical Engineering unlike other books that majorly contain Numerical Methods

Finally a math text for ChemE's!

This is an excellent and focused book for graduate ChemE's. Lots of the problems are the types you would see in graduate transport and controls courses. Everything is written with ChemE problems in mind. It's not like other textbooks, like Kreyzig's, that simply put out a bunch of generic problems to solve; still, Kreyzig's textbook is an engineering math classic, and you should have it on-hand in case you need some extra explanations. It is certainly better than the text of Varma and Morbidelli, which tends to move off-topic quickly and answer several unnecessary problems.

This text by Rice and Do is the best I've seen, but it is really hard to get a hold of. Good luck getting it, as it is certainly a good investment.

A very good book on Applied Mathematics in Chemical Engineering.

This is the most popular book on applied mathematics and modeling in chemical engineering. As late as 1985 Neal Amundson "had decried the fact that while there was a plethora of books on applied mathematics, none was really suitable for courses for chemical engineering students". Rice and Do's book is a worthy successor to the very popular "Application of Differential Equations to Chemical Engineering Problems" authored by Marshall and Pigford at the University of Delaware in 1947.

This book certainly has variety.
One song featured a whole tone scale that I thought was pretty cool.

My daughter's favorite song was about a woodchuck.
She would sing in a raucous voice while she played.
Her teacher (as the book suggests) had her play it in minor as well.
She made up new words for that version about how the woodchuck died.

Another standout is Aardvark Boogie with the big left hand position change.
The other songs, some of which are not about small mammals, are good, too.

Piano Adventures Lesson Book is solid!

I have been teaching piano at the beginner and intermediate levels for ten years. I find the Faber & Faber Piano Adventures Lesson Book to be thorough with regard to well-rounded piano instruction. Their newer version duplicates some of the supplemental materials that I provide (i.e., pentachords, scales, I-IV-V chords), which my students learn far in advance of the book's timeline. By the time most of my students complete level 2A, they have memorized all the major pentachords and scales and are working on the minor keys. Still, for under $8 per lesson book, this series is affordable and packed with songs that my students enjoy learning. I appreciate the massive efforts of Faber & Faber to make piano study fun and steadily progressive.

About the Author
Joan Salge Blake is a Clinical Associate Professor and Dietetics Internship Director at Boston University's Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. She teaches both graduate and undergraduate nutrition courses. She received her MS from Boston University.

Joan is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association) and the Massachusetts Dietetic Association (MDA). She has been a presenter and Presiding Officer at both the AND Annual Meeting and the MDA Annual Convention and is a guest lecturer at both the Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine and the Boston University School of Medicine. She was previously named MDA's “Young Dietitian of the Year” and is the past Director of Education and Nominating Committee Chairperson for the MDA. She currently serves on the MDA board. Joan has received the Whitney Powers Excellence in Teaching award from Boston University and the Annie Galbraith Outstanding Dietitian award from the Massachusetts Dietetic Association.

In addition to teaching and writing, Joan has a private practice specializing in weight management and lifestyle changes. Joan is often asked to translate complex nutritional issues in popular terms. As an AND National Media Spokesperson she has conducted over 850 media interviews, and is a contributor of nutrition articles to a variety of magazines and news outlets.
