Gambling can be traced to the very origins of human civilization. It is pervasive within all recorded cultures. So are the attempts to control it, regulate it, and even prohibit it. The opposition to gambling has as its roots religious or "morality" based arguments. One of the ironies of modern American life is that Utah, a state which absolutely bans all forms of gambling, leads the country in the volume of online gaming. Another irony is that the state of Nevada, and a number of formerly impoverished reservation-restricted Native American tribes, are able to achieve a significant measure of economic prosperity by the legalization of gambling and the construction of gambling casinos. In "Gambling: Mapping The American Moral Landscape", Alan Wolfe (Professor of Political Science and the Director of the Boisi Center for Religion and American Public Life, Boston College) and Erik C. About the Author

Lizabeth A. Allison is Chancellor Professor of Biology at the College of William & Mary. She received her Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Washington, specializing in molecular and cellular biology. Before coming to William & Mary, she spent eight years as a faculty member at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. Liz teaches introductory biology for majors and upper-division molecular biology courses. She has mentored graduate students and more than 100 undergraduate research students, many of them coauthoring papers with her on intracellular trafficking of the thyroid hormone receptor in normal and cancer cells. The recipient of numerous awards, including a State Council for Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV) Outstanding Faculty Award in 2009, Liz received one of the three inaugural Arts & Sciences Faculty Awards for Teaching Excellence in 2011, and a Plumeri Award for Faculty Excellence in 2012. In addition to her work on this text, she is author of Fundamental Molecular Biology, now in its second edition, with a third edition underway.

 

Michael Black received his Ph.D. in Microbiology & Immunology from Stanford University School of Medicine as a Howard Hughes Predoctoral Fellow. After graduation, he studied cell biology as a Burroughs Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellow at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England. His current research focuses on the use of molecules to identify and track the transmission of microbes in the environment. Michael is a professor of Cell & Molecular Biology at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, where he teaches introductory and advanced classes for majors in cell biology and microbiology. In addition to his teaching and research activities, Michael serves as the director of the Undergraduate Biotechnology Lab, where he works alongside undergraduate technicians to integrate research projects and inquiry-based activities into undergraduate classes.

 

Jeff Carmichael received his B.S. in Biology from Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania and his Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of Georgia. As an undergraduate student, he spent some time studying enzyme kinetics through a fellowship at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. His graduate work focused on sexual reproduction in an intriguing group of seed plants. He has been teaching and coordinating Introductory Biology at the University of North Dakota for more than 20 years. He also serves in the Office of Instructional Development where he helps other faculty members incorporate evidence-based best teaching practices in their courses. He has received excellence in teaching awards at UND and as a graduate student in Georgia. His revision of Unit 6 and part of Unit 5 of the Sixth Edition is his first foray into textbook writing.

 

Scott Freeman received a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Washington and was subsequently awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Postdoctoral Fellowship in Molecular Evolution at Princeton University. He has done research in evolutionary biology on topics ranging from nest parasitism to the molecular systematics of the blackbird family and is coauthor, with Jon Herron, of the standard-setting undergraduate text Evolutionary Analysis. Scott is the recipient of a Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Washington and is currently a Senior Lecturer in the UW Department of Biology, where he teaches introductory biology for majors, a writing-intensive course for majors called The Tree of Life, and a graduate seminar in college science teaching. Scott’s current research focuses on how active learning affects student learning and academic performance.

 

Greg Podgorski received his Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Penn State University and has been a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Plank Institute for Biochemistry and Columbia University. His research interests are in biology education, developmental genetics, and computational biology. Greg’s most recent work has been in mathematical modeling of how patterns of different cell types emerge during development and how tumors recruit new blood vessels in cancer. Greg has been teaching at Utah State University for more than 20 years in courses that include introductory biology for majors and for nonmajors, genetics, cell biology, developmental biology, and microbiology, and he has offered courses in nonmajors biology in Beijing and Hong Kong. He’s won teaching awards at Utah State University and has been recognized by the National Academies as a Teaching Fellow and a Teaching Mentor. 

 

Kim Quillin received her B.A. in Biology at Oberlin College summa cum laude and her Ph.D. in Integrative Biology from the University of California, Berkeley as a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow. Kim has worked in the trenches with Scott Freeman on every edition of Biological Science, starting with the ground-up development of the illustrations in the first edition in 1999 and expanding her role in each edition, always with the focus of helping students to think like biologists. Kim currently teaches introductory biology at Salisbury University, a member of the University System of Maryland, where she is actively involved in the ongoing student- centered reform of the concepts-and-methods course for biology majors. Her current research focuses on the scholarship of teaching and learning with an emphasis on visual model-based reasoning as a science process skill.  

 

Emily Taylor earned a B.A. in English at the University of California, Berkeley followed by a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Arizona State University, where she conducted research in the field of environmental physiology as a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. She is currently an associate professor of Biological Sciences at the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. Her student-centered research program focuses on the endocrine and reproductive physiology of freeranging reptiles, especially rattlesnakes. She teaches numerous undergraduate and graduate courses, including introductory biology, anatomy and physiology, endocrinology, and herpetology, and received the California Faculty Association’s Distinguished Educator Award in 2010 and Cal Poly’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 2012.

Biological Science is acclaimed for its clear. The book has a friendly style, excellent illustrations and multimedia material. Connect with real-life biological applications and scientific problems through boxes. In my opinion, Biological Science is the best textbook regarding life and biology.

Terrible Text Book

Not enough details provided. I constantly read my Biology, 8th Edition trusty campbell biology book to understand topics. This book is very poorly explained. I don't know why my professors chose this book...campbell biology saved my a$$. if you are using this book buy the campbell one as well. it will help in your bio classes.

One of the worst textbooks I have ever read.

I am a fourth year Animal Science student taking an introductory biology course. I have changed my major multiple times and managed to get through several science classes that discuss aspects of biology in-depth before actually taking an Intro to bio class. Though I am not proficient in Biology, I am very familiar with the basic concepts.

That being said, I absolutely hate this textbook. It has taken me two solid days to get through the second chapter with even a minimal understanding of what is being described because the erroneous details and overabundance of information that the author has bombarded readers with greatly hinders my ability to understand the text. I have purchased the Campbell Biology book mentioned in several other reviews of this particular text and am anticipating its arrival.

Teachers, please find a better (and less expensive!) text for your students. We don't need 1200 pages of garble to learn biology.

Finally! A clear professional guide for tailoring

I checked this book out of the library hoping to tell me how to make those welt pockets. I have 10 books in my library that have tailoring instructions, but I was stumped with the pockets until I read this book. He went step by step and assumed you didn't know anything about sewing pockets. This author uses the same common sense layman language throughout the whole book. The pictures are black and white, but helpful. He makes you feel as if he was passing down all his tailoring secrets from generations before along to you. This book is not about speed tailoring with fusible interfacings. He goes into great detail to show you the exact hand stitches to look like a pro did it. I like the way he warns people of the common mistakes and how to avoid them. I am an avid sewer, but I have never made a suit. I am trying to make a tuxedo for my husband, and I am excited about how it will look when it is done. He has given me the confidence and knowledge to be able to accomplish it with just intermediate sewing skills.

I found that this book was useful but at times hard to understand. The images are old and look like they have been photocopied over and over - so there is lack of clarity and detail in some pictures. I recommend that this book be purchased in conjunction with "Tailoring: The Classic Guide to Sewing the Perfect Jacket" as the latter has better pictures for clarity and ease (but focuses on women's tailoring only). I would buy this book for men's tailoring - if you only do women's tailoring, you could get away with "Tailoring: The Classic Guide to Sewing the Perfect Jacket".

Cabrera's section on pattern alterations re fit were helpful but so is the book "The Perfect Fit" though some of Robert Cabrera's solutions for altering fit - eg - correcting uneven shoulders treats these problems differently. It also has good fitting instructions on things not covered in "The Perfect Fit" such as knock knees, bow legs.

This book is not for a beginner but for someone with a high level of experience with sewing. It would suit someone who has some experience making tailored garments the commercial way who is looking to up-grade their skills to a custom level, i.e. someone that can already execute slightly tricky things like welt pockets, hand-made buttonholes etc.

Would I buy this book again despite some of its short-comings? Yes, but only in conjunction with
Tailoring: The Classic Guide to Sewing the Perfect Jacket due to the clarity of pictures in Cabrera's book.

The reason I would still buy this book is because other books tell you what you should do, the next step etc but this book also gives some explanation as to why you need to do things the way you should, it gives explanations about fittings, about anatomy, what you should be looking for, how to correct things but most importantly, why the problem presents itself.

An incredibly helpful book

+ Explains why you do certain steps (not all the time but enough to greater understand some techniques)
+ Techniques that I haven't thought to alter to suit the construction
+ Step by step guiding is incredibly helpful
+ The way that it's written is like a teacher guiding you as you sew; concise, conversational and encouraging.
+ Line drawings are plentiful and highly useful

- The photographs are terrible. Grainy and blurred, they don't help very much. I feel like taking my own as I do my first suit and slipping them in the pages as I go
- I didn't like the paper the book was printed on. It's too thin and 'chalky', reminds me of a roll of fax paper

/ On pages 104 and 105, a small paragraph repeats itself. If the authors wanted to stress the point, I'd thought they would have reworded it.
/ Can feel like it glances over topics which might turn off someone who is looking for a holy bible/ encyclopedia of suit construction. Has a small section on alteration for example and the style of suit is left to you with typical feature variations (the usual pocket shapes etc).

I'm looking forward to making my first full suit using this book. It isn't a beginners book but is within the understanding of a hobby sewer (at least); you have to understand a lot of the terminology used and I think you'd have to be comfortable with your pattern making skills to visualise the pieces involved. The little tips like on page 101 about shortening the right front of a double breasted jacket so it doesn't hand lower than the left side remind me of the many word of mouth tips my sewing teachers taught us. They make a world of difference and there are many to consider.

My expectations have been met and then beyond. A great read and fantastic resource.

*EDIT* There are a few more sentences in the book that do repeat themselves but looking back I think it wasn't necessary to reword the lines. It reminded me of teachers that wanted you to be mindful of the techniques and made it all the more endearing. It gives the book personality and a human touch.

Best Available - Wish there were more

I use this text extensively in my woodwind class. The double reed sections are excellent. The saxophone section is fine, but a bit short on information. There are several inaccuracies in the flute section (scientific, historical), and our flute professor disagrees with the information on embouchure and technique. The clarinet section is also weak. The author has some strange ideas on teaching embouchure and other skills, and there are inaccuracies within this section as well.

I use this and have students make corrections and notes in their copies of this book since there is nothing better available. I would like to see an updated version with corrections made and more consistent organization of material for each of the woodwinds. I would also like to see the illustrations revised so that they are more accurate. (I like a lot of the information in the Westphal book that is its competitor, but the Westphal is dense reading and very, very old.)

Update: December 2010. Don't teach woodwind pedagogy at the moment, but I did replace this book with readings from various sources when I was teaching it in the spring. I was tired of the limitations of this book. There are two newer books on the market I recommend that might meet your needs:

Fine Overview, with few inaccuracies

Woodwind players are much like trumpet players' about their mouthpieces, or violinists' about their strings....each has an opinion. The separate authors who write the wwodwind chapters, also have their opinions, a few tricks and techniques that are not mainstream, but clearly would work for most people. The best Woodwind Technque book on the market.

An essential to understanding, predicting, and influencing behavior

This is a general treatment, presenting the basics of much of the area which social psychologists treat under the topic of attitudes. It balances this general approach by detailing the reasoned action model. The prior work with this model, detailed in previous books and many empirical studies by other psychologists, is presented so that the reader can learn the model. The model treats people's decision making as the basic factor in our behavior. Based upon an understanding of the bases of the reasons for the action leads to ways in which the reasons con be evaluated and behavior made consistent with reality and one's values.
