I love this story and have read it multiple times

I love this story and have read it multiple times. Certainly one of the best survival stories out there. I originally saw and purchased the movie which could only have been better if it was in Imax as the photography is absolutely breath taking. The book certainly has some more detail however I think having seen the movie helps a bit with visualizing the extreme conditions these guys were in. There is a scene in the movie that starts as an incredible panoramic view of the mountain range and the camera slowly pans in to the point where you see these two specs climbing the shear face of the mountain. For me that scene really puts the whole story into perspective. There were no margins for error here and then how these two dealt with it and their emotions when the worst occurs. I highly recommend this one

Reaching Beyond One's Limit

I climbed, I clawed, I hung on for dear life through the entire book. This true story of two men climbing in the mountains of Peru had me figuratively climbing with them. This well written book describes what goes on in a climbers mine and the physical toll one experiences while knowing death is possible at any moment. The range of a climber's emotions are extreme. One can be joyful over the smallest detail like a sip of warm tea in the morning or an ice pick that never leaves your hand. The terror of what can happen in the blink of an eye (it happens) and the knowledge of an experienced climber of what to expect now begs the question; is it worth it to go on? An inner voice constantly prodded Joe Simpson forward despite the hopelessness that lay before him. My fingers got cold just reading it.
We all have a built in desire for survival; some more some less. I believe my desire to live, to survive, to just keep going, grew from experiencing this book.

A modern classic of survival, told with unusual grace and style

A classic survival story, on a par with Piers Paul Read's "Alive", Alfred Lansing's "Endurance", or any other great one cares to mention.

When Joe Simpson and fellow climber Simon Yates set off to conquer a remote Peruvian peak, they have no idea that they'll not only achieve a first ascent of the mountain's most difficult face, but also pull off one of the most unbelievable rescue/survival epics ever. Without sentimentality but with a near-poetic insight, Simpson takes the reader through his ordeal and Yates's counter-narrative; this book will leave you gasping at its intensity, and also applauding the singular will that takes one man through an ordeal he shouldn't have survived--but did. Simpson has gone on to write other books about climbing, and all of them are as read-worthy as "Touching the Void." But I'd start with "Void"; it's a great introduction to Simpson and his unique, compelling prose.

Sexy Intelligentsia

Deleuze's work is complex and often difficult, especially for the reader who comes with an interest in art, music, and literature but little familiarity with (or perhaps tolerance for) late-twentieth century philosophy.
In this study of Deleuze's writing on music and painting, Ronald Bogue distills the essence of the philosopher's decades-long interest in these disciplines. This is no "Deleuze for Dummies"--some familiarity with Deleuzian concepts is assumed and expected. As with similar texts (Harari's _How James Joyce Made His Name: A Reading of the Final Lacan_, for example, or Rochlitz's _The Disenchantment of Art: The Philosophy of Walter Benjamin_), _Deleuze on Music, Painting, and the Arts_ tells us probably as much about Bogue as it does about Deleuze.
This is useful, however, because Bogue has read widely and with comprehension not only in Deleuze but in the whole network of related subject matter touching on his concerns--Jacob von Uexkull, Susan Oyama, Paul Griffiths and Alois Riegl among others. Additionally, Bogue's consideration of Modern music is exemplary for its clear-sighted and vivid engagement with difficult (what Adorno might even call radical) music. Take as an example this brief segment from the discussion of Messiaen's spectacular _Catalogue d'oiseaux_: "...Messiaen never approaches an individual bird's song in isolation, but instead juxtaposes it with the songs of other species and situates it within an evocative sonic landscape....Such pictorialism might suggest that Messiaen's aesthetic is purely mimetic, but the actual results of his practice belie this suspicion." He goes on to discuss the piece's motivic development and the composer's modal style.
Deleuze is at his most brilliant in the writings on Messiaen and Francis Bacon, and Bogue's book allows easier access for readers without the necessary time or desire to wade through thousands of pages to find what they're looking for. Of course, the ideas about music and painting are inextricable from the other ideas in those pages (there are, after all, 'a thousand plateaus', and it is not impossible that the reader may feel the need to explore further to obtain a more complete understanding--which is, after all, not such a bad thing....)
At the beginning of the twenty-first century we could do worse than immerse ourselves in a study of Deleuze. For the student of music and art, as well as for those interested in expanding their knowledge of one of the great thinkers of that long, dark, and now late century, this is a valuable book.

Lorenzo Secondari, a veteran of the recently ended Great War and forever changed by it, is the head engineer of the titular utopia, the Italian free state of Fiume. He and his compatriots build flying boats and fight communism while dealing with American secret agents, including Harry Houdini and Howard Lovecraft (who’s now working as Houdini’s publicity agent after going into advertising). Hitler died saving another man’s life in a bar fight, Wilson was poisoned, and Mussolini’s been disabled by a pair of bullets aimed “where a man least likes to be shot,” so the Europe in which Secondari is attempting to create his radio-controlled airborne torpedoes and other gizmos is already massively different from ours. An introduction by Warren Ellis and an interview with Sterling sandwich the novel, both bearing an air of false gravitas, but the actual story is wacky and fun what-if-ing at its finest.”

[STARRED REVIEW] “Noted sci-fi maven and futurologist Sterling (Love Is Strange, 2012, etc.) takes a side turn in the slipstream in this offbeat, sometimes-puzzling work of dieselpunk-y alternative history. Resident in Turin, hometown of Calvino, for a dozen years, Sterling has long been experimenting with what the Italians call fantascienza, a mashup of history and speculation that’s not quite science fiction but is kin to it. Take, for example, the fact that Harry Houdini once worked for the Secret Service, add to it the fact that H.P. Lovecraft once worked for Houdini, and ecco: why not posit Lovecraft as a particularly American kind of spook, “not that old-fashioned, cloak-and-dagger, European style of spy,” who trundles out to Fiume to see what’s what in the birthplace of Italian futurism-turned-fascism? Lovecraft is just one of the historical figures who flits across Sterling’s pages, which bear suitably futuristic artwork, quite wonderful, by British illustrator John Coulthart. Among the others are Woodrow Wilson and Adolf Hitler, to say nothing of Gabriele D’Annunzio and Benito Mussolini. “Seen from upstream, most previous times seem mad,” notes graphic novelist Warren Ellis in a brief introduction, but the Futurist project seems particularly nutty from this distance; personified by Lorenzo Secondari, a veteran of World War I who leads the outlaw coalition called the Strike of the Hand Committee in the “pirate utopia” of the soi disant Republic of Carnaro, its first task is to build some torpedoes and then turn them into “radio-controlled, airborne Futurist torpedoes,” not the easiest thing considering the technological limitations of the time. A leader of the “Desperates,” who “came from anywhere where life was hard, but honor was still bright,” Secondari and The Prophet—D’Annunzio, that is—recognize no such limitations and discard anything that doesn’t push toward the future. So why not a flying pontoon boat with which to sail off to Chicago, and why not a partnership with Houdini to combat world communism? Bruce Sterling (Schismatrix, The Zenith Angle, Zeitgeist) is an internationally-bestselling author, journalist, editor, columnist, and critic. He is perhaps best known for his ten visionary science fiction novels, as a founder of the cyberpunk movement, and as the editor of the quintessential cyberpunk anthology Mirrorshades. REVIEWS OF THE LAST EDITION: "Without a doubt, this text is a must for serious students of pulmonary medicine, whether in training, academic tenure, or mature clinical practice." ― JAMA REVIEW OF 4th EDITION: 'It goes without saying that this is a thorough, in-depth review of chest medicine and as far as I could see, leaves nothing out. I was pleased to see this is a book for active physicians rather than researchers or scientists. It is aimed squarely at the specialists but generalists such as GPs or specialists in other but related disciplines would also find this book a good reference source. I also liked the principle that associated non-respiratory problems are covered in detail. Take for example sarcoidosis, which has always been classified as a chest disease but is also a multi-system disease. The chapter on sarcoidosis is an excellent review of the whole topic and not just the pulmonary aspects. In addition there are excellent chapters on issues that you don't always find, such as air pollution in high altitudes and diving medicine.

Importantly the book is readable and relevant to physicians and adopts a well-rounded approach to informing the doctor what he or she needs to know. The depth of detail achieved is just right and this book has an encyclopaedic feel to it. Well written.

I am a pulmonary/cc fellow and have been using this book as my primary text. It is wonderfully written with good clear explanations and sufficiently detailed without being cumbersome. It gives an excellent overview of all the topics. It is filled with illustrations, graphs and tables that improve the readability of the text. Many of the chapters are written by authors that are world reknowned in their fields. The only complaint I have is for a work of this magnitude it has several grammatical errors. Almost every other page! That is why 4 stars.

I like this story

I like this story. However, I think that it should have been combined with the prequel she wrote to write this one. It was good to "visit" the old gang. However, these characters don't seem to develop very much they seem very flat and it seems to be a book to visit with the whole gang. I wish it would have been more of them being shocked and impacted by the changes then changing/adapting. (Like Fila crowding out Sunshine's cafe, how many restaurants can a small town really support?) It should show them adapting to the "new" chance creek. Not just fitting in right away.

I'm glad we got the rest of Cole and Sunshine's story. They go through a lot to figure out what they want. Their Christmas surprise gifts to each other were amazing. Another excellent book to the Cowboys of Chance Creek series. I loved finding out what was going on with the other couples. Cora Seton is one of my favorite authors and I can't wait for the next book from her.
