About the Author
Edward Weston (1886-1958) is one of the twentieth century's most prominent and pioneering photographers. In 1917 he became a member of the London Salon and in 1922 he met Alfred Stieglitz and Paul Strand.

In 1923 with his marriage failing he went to Mexico and opened a studio. It is at this time that he began keeping journals which he referred to as "daybooks." He wrote in his daybooks until 1943, and in 1961 they were edited by Nancy Newhall and published for the first time.

He was the first photographer to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship. Sadly, he was stricken with Parkinson's disease in the early 1940s and he relied on his sons, Brett and Cole, to continue printing for him. Cole, his youngest son became his assistant in 1946 and in 1952 the two men put together their father's 50th Anniversary Folio. After Edward's death in 1958 Cole fulfilled his father's wish and continued to print his negatives.

Nancy Newhall (1908-1974) dedicated thirty years of her life to photography, as a writer, scholar, critic, editor, and collaborator in publishing the work of several of the most influential photographers of this century.

Among her many accomplishments are the highly acclaimed exhibitions of Paul Strand and Edward Wilson, which she directed at the Museum of Modern Art. Author of the classic biography of Ansel Adams, The Eloquent Light, she also edited and collaborated with Paul Strand to produce the book Time in New England. Her other books include P.H. Emerson: The Fight for Photography as a Fine Art; Edward Wilson: The Flame of Recognition, (ed); and This Is the American Earth (with Ansel Adams).

Beaumont Newhall (1908-1993) was a distinguished historian and curator, and author of the definitive The History of Photography.

Second time reading Weston's Day Books over thirty years. First time I was young and only looking for technical hints. This time I'm much more interested in relationships, family, and Weston's struggle with his art, money and life A must read for all artists.

A must read if you are an artist...

I can tell that this was a really interesting book. After reading it front to back more than once, I now have a new outlook on Edward and his work. I finally understand what he was trying to convey though his images thanks to this book. Edward Weston had a fascinating life especially with all who he encountered. This is a must read if you are an artist, photographer or not!

Superior Journalistic Look at a Facinating Subject

This 1997 second book by journalist Michael Ruhlman is his first of several essays and collaborations in writing about the upper reaches of the American culinary scene. The most fascinating thing about the book is in learning with Ruhlman, as an outsider to the culinary profession, exactly how demanding a job in the culinary arts can be. What is taken as a matter of course by people like Daniel Boulud and Jaques Pepin comes as a surprise to outsider Ruhlman. The surprise is in the commitment to performance which chefs are expected to make to maintain a service to their customers.
The book is a reporting on Ruhlman's taking an abbreviated version of the full curriculum at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), where only the President of the school and a few select senior instructors know of the author's real role at the school. This means that when the author did attend classes, he attended the full class, from start to finish, and was expected to perform as well as any other student. While the CIA has many of the appearances of a liberal arts college, it is much closer in practice to a trade school. One symptom of this is that the stocks produced by the basic kitchen skills classes are then used by other classes at the school and they are used by each of the four restaurants run by the school for students, faculty, and outside guests. In a sense, this is a mix of trade school and graduate school, where it is expected that no one will do work worthy of a grade less than a B-.
The epiphany that reveals how serious the culinary profession is about uninterrupted service comes early in the first year when the school is hit by a serious snowstorm and the author considers whether or not he should attempt the difficult trek into the school. The great revelation is that the school and the instructor of Ruhlman's class on that occasion did not expect it to be above and beyond the call of duty to make it to class, and they would have not thought twice about lowering Ruhlman's grade had he been a true, full time student.
When I left school, I was surprised at how much easier life at a job was compared to life in school. I am sure that had a lot to do with the fact that I entered a largely intellectual avocation where so much about how things are done and how long they will take can change from job to job and even lowly technicians are give some opening to contribute to setting target dates. Culinary trades are a much different kettle of fish, literally.
In a professional kitchen, the line cook is totally at the mercy of who happens to walk into the restaurant that day, and how many people walk into the restaurant that day, and at what time. The challenge is to prepare so well and exercise one's skills so often that making six or eight different dishes to perfection at a sauté station becomes second nature. Since it is the job of the CIA to teach you how to do that, the classes can be very demanding.
The first 30% of the book covers the introductory class on basic skills and the main character is the instructor of that class. The last 30% of the book covers time spent in two of the CIA's four practice restaurants. The middle of the book covers experiences in specialized classes for Garde Manger, baking, and other specialities. If you do not already know the serious difference between savory cooking and baking, the books chapter describing the baking class will clear this up in a big hurry.
I confess that I am very fond of this type of book. To me it represents a successful presentation of material that reality TV shows can never hope to achieve. The paradigm for this kind of writing is Tracy Kidder's book `The Soul of a New Machine', to which I would favorably compare this work. You should find it doubly interesting if, as I do, you have an interest in the how and why of the culinary arts and personalities.

What It Really Takes ...

One can probably forgive Michael Ruhlman for being a bit obsessive. This volume pairs with his `Soul of a Chef' to provide a veritable one-two punch of cook training voyeurism; he has covered this field with skill and obvious enthusiasm. Between the two books I doubt he leaves any stone unturned in describing the various joys and horrors of modern culinary indoctrination. I'll also give him visionary credit: this particular book dates from 1997 - a full nine years before Bill Buford published his abused-apprentice tome `Heat', whose success will do doubt spawn dozens of ridiculous imitations.

Anyone writing seriously about chef training now appears almost automatically indebted to Mr. Ruhlman. And no wonder: the premise here is almost too good for any aspiring chef. The author goes undercover posing as a student at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA)--arguably the best culinary training school in the country, if not the world. (Only the teachers and administrators know his true identity and purpose.) The book often reads like cleaned-up notes from his various adventures--and that's really where the attraction lies. If you find being a virtual student at CIA potentially attractive, I suspect you'll love `The Making of a Chef'; Ruhlman not only give you what it's like, he truly gives you how it feels.

A stark example clarifies the emotions involved: apparently the weather during our hero's winter semester at CIA was the worst in years: many feet of snow dumped regularly. (The campus is in the Hudson Valley in New York State). At one juncture Ruhlman ponders not coming in to class--he's expected for an important test--due to the weather. And one of his teachers--after quietly hearing his decision--lets him have it over the phone: "We're different," he said. "We get there. It's part of what makes us a chef." (I strongly suspect Ruhlman chose his title from this exchange.) I was quiet. "We like it that way. That's why this place (CIA) never shuts down. And we're teaching the students this." The author learns quickly from this airing-out: "This is a physical world. The food is either finished at six o'clock or it's not. ... It wasn't simply that excuses were not accepted here--excuses had no meaning at all." (Italics mine.)

The detail here is nothing short of astounding. The cast of characters at CIA--from stock specialists to obsessives on bread cultures--never disappoint because we see what makes them tick and why each believes the work he's doing--and teaching--is important. And by taking us into this world and showing us just how passionate the teachers and students are we--at least those of us who love good cooking--also see its importance. This is a hard world but everyone loves being there. I found the best part of the author's style--and he's no slouch in general--came from the colorful way he showed me where that love come from in each individual he encounters.

Still, `Making' is not perfect. Ruhlman sets out a strict curriculum format--plowing through each semester, each class in chronological order--and never varies, making for a few dull interludes and redundancies. It's not an awful setup, but some variation would have been welcome; the author clearly loves some aspects of his visit (grill station, bread-making) more than others.

Of course, ultimately Michael Ruhlman is not a chef or even a chef-in-training. He's a journalist, and no matter how immersed he becomes in CIA's world we never lose sight of his voyeurism. This perspective has a few downsides, e.g., any tension about failing or even displeasing a teacher has to be conveyed second-hand through his fellow student's experiences. But I found the detachment ultimately very successful. I didn't want to know what's it's like to be a CIA student in the sense of getting inside anyone's head. I wanted to know what rigors must be overcome by anyone to even begin the journey of becoming a top-line chef. And `The Making of a Chef' was a hugely instructive and entertaining guide.

About the Author

Charles Carroll is an independent consultant. Initially educated at the U.S. Naval Academy, he later earned an MS in Systems Management at the University of Southern California and served as a Supply, Logistics and Systems Officer in the Marine Corps. He then worked at Sprint Corporation and General Electric’s Employers Reinsurance Corporation (ERC), where he was trained and certified as an internal consultant in GE’s Six Sigma Quality processes,served as a Master Black Belt for the IT Department, administered the local and offshore outsourcing programs, automated project management, and established a global Project Management Office within ERC’s IT department.

Charlie serves as an independent consultant in project/program/PMO management, process improvement, and application development. He has written articles for a number of professional publications, spoken at domestic and international conferences, and developed a number of project management and Six Sigma tools and training for clients. Truly ZAYN by ZAYN, a raw and unfiltered look at the person - not the popstar

Self-titled and self-produced, Zayn awards us with a view of his life pre, during, and post 1D. But the book isn’t really about 1D at all. It’s a sprawling and eclectic work of song notes, photographs of Malik, and a few pieces of his own personal art. It provides us, through the sentimental stories and heartwarming positivity that Malik weaves in every page, with a rare inside look at the person - not the popstar.

It’s romantic at times, simply in the personal and casual nature with which the book presents itself. You can imagine Malik spilling his life’s story to you at a barbecue, and the words seem pulling directly from his own thoughts. There's no ghostwriting here, and it's refreshing to see a celebrity's "personal account of their life" actually be their OWN personal account, and not an interviewer trying to hammer in the person's syntax in every sentence. These are Zayn's words, emphatic and innocent and so very relatable.

There’s not much sugar-coating, either. It’s honest and real, two things that Malik has professed to always striving for, and I must say he definitely succeeds. He details his struggles with an eating disorder, as well as crippling anxiety and self-doubt. It’s equal parts heart wrenching and hopeful. He vows to perform, vows to make his fans and his family proud, and you find yourself rooting for him to do just that. Though Malik pulls no punches, describing his feelings about lack of control in his life that led to his eating disorder, there’s a wistfulness to his words. Never cynical or even histrionic, but occasionally weathered after the vast amount of life he’s lived already, the book also serves as a true reminder that Malik is only twenty-two years old. He is just barely an adult in the eyes of the world, but has already experienced enough to fill a book. He’s charming in his photographs, and his talent shines through in song notes, bits of unused lyrics, and his own personal art creations he displays.

All-in-all, it was a great read. I finished in just about two and a half hours - and that was with stopping to appreciate Malik’s beauty in every photograph. It’s a quick read-through, meant to be browsed and perused and appreciated for years to come. If you want to know about the real Zayn Malik, there’s no better way than with his own words, and this is it.

What have I learned about Zayn after reading this book? That he loves his mother more than anything in the world, and constantly talks about her. He loves to read and write—every lyric he pens down means something to him. He likes to eat samosas, and can cook. He calls himself a feminist and thinks the world would be a hell of a better place if we had more women in positions of power. He loves boxing, he loves cartoons and superheroes—and he’s literally just like any other young-adult boy on the streets, except that he has millions of fans—whom he acknowledges and thanks on every other page. This book isn’t just an autobiography; it’s a clarification, and it’s a well-formulated, honest defense written by someone who has been labelled and trashed for years and years, for no good reason.

A thing that drew me in about Zayn was that he doesn’t talk about other people. Not once does he trash or defame anyone—not his ex, not his bandmates, not even his management. He keeps it classy, talking about his issues with fame, the part he played in everything. He presents a candid look into his experiences with mental health and opens up about his anxiety, his ADHD and eating disorders. He had every reason to talk about his failed engagement and his broken friendships with the other members of One Direction, but he does not. This book is about him, and he makes sure that it’s never about anyone else. It’s about his life, his world, his past and what he hopes his future will be. It’s about his struggles with his faith, his Pakistani-English mixed race, about his experiences with bigotry and racism in the past. It’s about him.

This book is not just an autobiography; it’s a high-production, piece of art. Full of glossy, often full-page photos and hand-written notes, scans of his lyrics and doodles, Zayn is the perfect addition to any fan’s (or non-fan’s) collection. It’s a perfect coffee table book, written with sincerity and class. And though you may not care about him now, you’ll find him charming and endearing once you’ve finished reading.

We love you Zayn

There is a rare selection of books that I finish within 1 - 3 days. No matter how much I enjoy a book, it's not unless it's super attention-grabbing (see also: Ellen Hopkins' books) that I can finish it in such a short amount of time. But this book definitely fits into that category - and for good reason.

This book is amazing. I never stopped loving Zayn, from the moment I discovered 1D until now I've always loved him. But I still had a lot of questions, especially regarding March 25 2015. I won't say that *all* my questions have been answered, but I definitely feel like I know more about and understand/relate to Zayn more than I ever have before.

If you're looking for a "tell-all" book on the on-goings of 1D with a bunch of "juicy drama" in it, this book is not for you. He doesn't say anything bad about the other 1D boys; the only time he talks about them is when he's talking about leaving the band, or about how much he appreciated the experience his years with them gave him. He never bad-mouths any of the members in this book or talks about anything they've done, only about things he's done.

He talks about a lot of things that I can only imagine took a lot of courage for him to reveal to us - including an eating disorder and anxiety issues. The fact that he trusts his fans enough to feel like he can open up about these things, is amazing.

In addition to the serious things though, he also talks about the process of making his music/songs. He talks about what all went into the creation of the album, who he worked with for tracks, etc. It's awesome to get an inside look and learn what goes into his art. I almost feel like I'm witnessing something I shouldn't be.

All around, this is an amazing book. I think anybody who's interested in Zayn or wants to learn more about who he really is on the inside, should read it. I'm so proud of Zayn and everything he has accomplished and will accomplish in the future.

About the Author
Danny Leiwy teaches at the London School of Economics and Political Science, on the University of London's International Programme and City University, London. He is a Senior Teaching Fellow at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. Danny is currently in practice as a Chartered Accountant. He was a Principal Lecturer in Accounting and Tax at the University of Westminster for 30 years, teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Robert Perks formerly taught Accounting and Finance at the International Business School on the Isle of Man. Robert also held chairs at the following universities: Queen's University, Belfast, Middlesex University, Aberdeen University, Birkbeck College University of London and University of Westminster.

Far too many typos will make you spend extra time figuring out what's wrong

The book is well-structured and I think does a fairly good job explaining concepts of accounting.
Yet the problem is that in several places there are typos made in actual figures which gives you a different answer when you do an exercise. This can be pretty annoying and takes extra time. At least in 2 places the explanation was apparently copy-pasted from the previous edition because the diagrams they were explaining, were completely different.

I also wish they would include answers to all questions/exercises, not just self-assessment.

Book is great however, just have a couple of issues

Book is great however, just have a couple of issues:

1) I am using this book in conjunction with a course I am doing at university. In the university subject guide it refers to page numbers in the book. I cannot seem to get page numbers reading the book on my Mac which is very frustrating.

2) There doesn't seem to be any solutions to the end of chapter questions so I cannot check my answers nor seek a solution for guidance when I have no idea what the answer is.

Other than that, e-books are the greatest!

This is another beautiful book by Oriana Fallaci. In this book she describes her sadness and pain at the loss of her unborn child. I highly recommend this book.
