A Treasure Chest for the Travelling Surfer
By Ole Kils
This book proved to be a very valuable resource of valid and accurate information pertaining to surf spots I have visited last summer in Europe. I surfed northern denmark and germany, and even though these are not very common surf spots, the book had information about spots, and it was a great help. This book not only attempts to provide information on the surf-quality of the particular spot, it also gives a little bit of insight in the surf culture of the area and other information and tips that might not seen obvious at first glance but does prove to be very interesting and worth reading. Unlike atravel agent's brochure it is very unbiased and allows surfers to travel "their way". In Planning my surf trip to France nex summer, this book gave me a place for reference and also allowed me to "float" around in it, checking out this spot or another. The thousands of photographs give the spots a face, making the book not only informational but also very entertaining to read. It lets the reader dream of a perfect vacation and then proves a very valuable tool to realize that dream and turn it into a reality.

The Bible of Surfing Europe
By A Customer
This is the most awesome book on surfing Europe imaginable, covering all the best spots (and then some) from Scotland to Italy, from the Azores to Germany, and everywhere inbetween! Surf in Amsterdam? You betcha! It also includes Morocco. It is full of incredibly professional high-tech, accurate maps, pictures, write-ups, and gauges a variety of conditions for each spot- such as water temp, crowd factor, quality of wave, direction wave breaks, power of wave, ocean (break) bottom, what sort of rubber you'll need, etc. Since you'll notice that Amazon is often out of stock on this, or that it takes '3-5- weeks for delivery', I recommend surfing to Amazon.com's UK site (amazon.com.uk) and ordering directly from them in England- you'll pay a little more for shipping, but they usually have it in stock and you'll be sure to get your copy sooner. This is thee Surf Bible of Europe!

Joel Sternfeld: American Prospects, by Kerry Brougher, Andy Grundberg, Anne Tucker

First published in 1987, Joel Sternfeld’s American Prospects is the classic photo record of 1980s America. This definitive edition, made with new plates and including one additional photograph, offers a spectacular, funny, sad and soberly riveting portrait of America’s diverse possibilities and prospects in the Reagan era. From the famous “Wet n’ Wild Aquatic Theme Park” in Florida to “The Space Shuttle Columbia Lands at Kelly Air Force Base” in San Antonio, Texas; from melancholy images of beached whales in Oregon to beautiful views of Yellowstone National Park and Bear Lake in Utah; from post-tornado Nebraska to a previously unseen photograph from the series, “Bikini Contest, Fort Lauderdale, FL, March 1983”; the sublime contradictions and tragicomedy of this volume are without doubt one of the greatest accomplishments of color photography, all the more fully realized in this splendid new edition. An essay by Kerry Brougher, Chief Curator at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, considers the historical context of Sternfeld’s book and the pivotal role that American Prospects has played in the evolution of contemporary filmmaking and art photography.
A major exponent of color photography in America, Joel Sternfeld was born in New York City in 1944. He has received numerous awards including two Guggenheim fellowships, a Prix de Rome and the Citibank Photography Award. Sternfeld’s other books include On This Site (1997), Hart Island (1998), Stranger Passing (2001), Walking the High Line (2002), Sweet Earth (2006), When It Changed (2007), Oxbow Archive (2008) and First Pictures (2011).

Review
American Prospects is less a composed sequence than a series of deceptively classical compositions. But many of the pictures contain wild juxtapositions: firefighters extinguish a blaze while one of their number shops nonchalantly for pumpkins matching the flames; a basketball hoop stands sentry in a new suburban dead end; pretty flowers shimmer alongside a sports car in the same wild pink. The idealized semirural life is really a world of uncanny disquiet, perfectly suited to the still and mute image. (Aperture Magazine)

About the Author
Andy Grundberg is a critic, curator, and teacher in Washington, D.C., where he is the associate dean of undergraduate studies and chair of photography at the Corcoran College of Art and Design. From 1981 to 1991, he was an art critic for the New York Times, for which he continues to write today.

desert island photography book
By P.S. Woods
thank you so much for reprinting this! I wanted this book when first got interested in photography, but the prices for the out-of-print classic were too high.

i love love LOVE this book.

enough has been written about these images, the artist, the process, the subject, etc... so that leaves me with my experience. i will just say that my appreciation of this work has developed in concert with the depth of my understanding of visual art. there are other photographers who are more exquisite and others who are more lovely/human, but this work is the closest thing to perfection i know.

this is my desert island photography book

Awesome and beautifully printed and sequenced
By Mike Schneider Jr.
Gorgeous everything in this book. The detail of what looks like large format, the color, and the distinct look of the period (80s, I believe) seals it.

Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age, by Sherry Turkle

Renowned media scholar Sherry Turkle investigates how a flight from conversation undermines our relationships, creativity, and productivity—and why reclaiming face-to-face conversation can help us regain lost ground.

We live in a technological universe in which we are always communicating. And yet we have sacrificed conversation for mere connection.

Preeminent author and researcher Sherry Turkle has been studying digital culture for over thirty years. Long an enthusiast for its possibilities, here she investigates a troubling consequence: at work, at home, in politics, and in love, we find ways around conversation, tempted by the possibilities of a text or an email in which we don’t have to look, listen, or reveal ourselves.

We develop a taste for what mere connection offers. The dinner table falls silent as children compete with phones for their parents’ attention. Friends learn strategies to keep conversations going when only a few people are looking up from their phones. At work, we retreat to our screens although it is conversation at the water cooler that increases not only productivity but commitment to work. Online, we only want to share opinions that our followers will agree with – a politics that shies away from the real conflicts and solutions of the public square.

The case for conversation begins with the necessary conversations of solitude and self-reflection. They are endangered: these days, always connected, we see loneliness as a problem that technology should solve. Afraid of being alone, we rely on other people to give us a sense of ourselves, and our capacity for empathy and relationship suffers. We see the costs of the flight from conversation everywhere: conversation is the cornerstone for democracy and in business it is good for the bottom line. In the private sphere, it builds empathy, friendship, love, learning, and productivity.

But there is good news: we are resilient. Conversation cures.

Based on five years of research and interviews in homes, schools, and the workplace, Turkle argues that we have come to a better understanding of where our technology can and cannot take us and that the time is right to reclaim conversation. The most human—and humanizing—thing that we do.

The virtues of person-to-person conversation are timeless, and our most basic technology, talk, responds to our modern challenges. We have everything we need to start, we have each other.

Review
Turkle is by no means antitechnology. But after a career examining relations between people and computers, she blends her description with advocacy. She presents a powerful case that a new communication revolution is degrading the quality of human relationships.” — Jacob Weisberg, The New York Review of Books

“Turkle deftly explores and explains the good and bad of this ‘flight from conversation’ while encouraging parents, teachers and bosses to champion conversation, use technology more intentionally and serve as role models.” —Success, A Best Book of 2015

“Reclaiming Conversation reminds readers what’s at stake when devices win over face-to-face conversation, and that it’s not too late to conquer those bad habits.” – Seattle Times

“Turkle’s witty, well-written book offers much to ponder…. This is the season of polls and sound bites, of Facebook updates extolling the perceived virtues or revealing the assumed villainy of opinions. Talk is cheap, but conversation is priceless.” – Boston Globe

“Drawing from hundreds of interviews, [Turkle] makes a convincing case that our unfettered ability to make digital connections is leading to a decline in actual conversation—between friends and between lovers, in classrooms and in places of work, even in the public sphere. In having fewer meaningful conversations each day, Turkle argues, we’re losing the skills that made them possible to begin with—the ability to focus deeply, think things through, read emotions, and empathize with others.” —The American Scholar

“This is a persuasive and intimate book, one that explores the minutiae of human relationships. Turkle uses our experiences to shame us, showing how, phones in hand, we turn away from our children, friends and co-workers, even from ourselves.” – Washington Post

“Reclaiming Conversation is best appreciated as a sophisticated self-help book. It makes a compelling case that children develop better, students learn better, and employees perform better when their monitors set good examples and carve our spaces for face-to-face interactions."
- Jonathan Franzen, The New York Times Book Review

“Nobody has thought longer or more profoundly than Sherry Turkle about how our brave new world of social media affects the way we confront each other and ourselves.  Hers is a voice--erudite and empathic, practical and impassioned--that needs to be heeded.”-Rebecca Newberger Goldstein, Author of Plato at the Googleplex: Why Philosophy Won't Go Away.

“This book makes a winning case for conversation, at the family dinner table or in the office, as the ‘talking cure’ for societal and emotional ills.”
- Publishers Weekly

“A timely wake-up call urging us to cherish the intimacy of direct, unscripted communication.”
- Kirkus

“'Only connect!' wrote E. M. Forster in 1910. In this wise and incisive book, Sherry Turkle offers a timely revision: 'Only converse!'"
- Nicholas Carr, author of The Shallows and The Glass Cage

“Smartphones are the new sugar and fat: They are so potent they can undo us if we don’t limit them. Sherry Turkle introduces a lifesaving principle for the twenty-first century: face-to-face conversation first. This heuristic really works; your life, your family life, your work life will all be better. Turkle offers a thousand beautifully written arguments for why you should lift your eyes up from the screen.”
- Kevin Kelly, senior maverick for Wired; author of What Technology Wants

"Digital media were supposed to turn us from passive viewers to interactive participants, but Turkle reveals how genuine human interaction may be the real casualty of supposedly social technologies. Without conversation, there is no syntax, no literacy, no genuine collaboration, no empathy, no civilization. With courage and compassion, Turkle shows how the true promise of social media would be to reacquaint us with the lost of art making meaning together."
- Douglas Rushkoff, author of Present Shock

"To reclaim conversation is to reclaim our humanity.  We all know it at some level, and yet how satisfying to find our hunch proved right:  Turkle shows us that to love well, learn well, work well, and be well, we must protect a vital piece of ourselves, and can.   What an important conversation about conversation this is."
- Gish Jen, author of Typical American and Mona in the Promised Land

"Like the air we breathe, or the water we drink, most of us take face-to-face conversations for granted.  In this  brilliant and incisive book, Sherry Turkle explains the power of conversation, its fragility at present, the consequences of its loss, and how it can be  preserved and reinvigorated."
- Howard Gardner, John H. and Elisabeth A. Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education

“Sherry Turkle’s unrivalled expertise in how people interact with devices, coupled with her deep empathy for people struggling to find their identity, shine through on every absorbing and illuminating page of Reclaiming Conversation. We can start remembering how to talk to one another by talking about this timely book.”
- Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Harvard Business School professor and author of MOVE and Confidence

"It is a rare event when a single book presents both  a compelling indictment of one of the more insidious effects of technology on our culture and an immediate, elegantly simple antidote---all the while  providing a stirring apologia for what is most important about language's power to move us, to expand our thoughts, and to deepen our relationship to each other. Once again, Sherry Turkle seeks to preserve human qualities that are eroding while we are always "elsewhere": empathy, generativity, and mentoring our young."
-Maryanne Wolf, John DiBiaggio Professor of Citizenship and Public Service, Director of the Center for Reading and Language Research, and Professor in the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study and Human Development at Tufts University

"In a time in which the ways we communicate and connect are constantly changing, and not always for the better, Sherry Turkle provides a much needed voice of caution and reason to help explain what the f*** is going on."
- Aziz Ansari, author of Modern Romance

Praise for Alone Together:

"Savvy and insightful."
- New York Times

“What Turkle brings to the topic that is new is more than a decade of interviews with teens and college students in which she plumbs the psychological effect of our brave new devices on the generation that seems most comfortable with them.”
- Wall Street Journal

“Nobody has ever articulated so passionately and intelligently what we're doing to ourselves by substituting technologically mediated social interaction…. Equipped with penetrating intelligence and a sense of humor, Turkle surveys the front lines of the social-digital transformation….”
- Lev Grossman, Time Magazine

“Important…. Admirably personal….Turkle’s book will spark useful debate….”
- The Boston Globe

“Turkle summarizes her new view of things with typical eloquence…fascinating, readable.”
- New York Times Book Review

A REAL wake up call for us millennials
By Amazon Customer
I’m 25. When I'm with friends, we have our phones out all the time, even at dinner and movies. And only sometimes, someone will object. I’ve never given much thought to why - actually I didn't even realize I had my phone in my hand 24/7. This book is a real eye-opener. When I’m busy on my phone, I did try to listen to what other people are saying, but I recognize now that I was barely paying attention to them.

In this beautifully written, passionate book, Turkle discusses how what I’m doing has become how conversation has moved in the culture as a whole. So many of us divide our attention between our friends and our phones, between our co-workers and our email. Now in team meetings, I make sure to keep my phone in my bag and at dinner, I don't put it on the table. Turkle is not didactic or preachy, but this book is filled with great examples of the costs of a life lived with an eye to “elsewhere.” This is a great read and a real wake up call.

Would You Rather Text than Talk?
By Sam Horn, Intrigue Expert
Have you watched Sherry Turkle's TED talk - Connected, But Alone? - which has more than 3 million views?

If so, you already know she is a masterful communicator. She held a ballroom of 5000 American Society of Association Executives spellbound at their annual convention this summer with the backstory of her research for "Reclaiming Conversation."

A few of the intriguing sound-bites from that talk (and this book) include:

a. "We will always be lonely unless we learn to like being alone."

b. "We let digital devices dictate our daily life at great cost. They are an assault on compassion."

c. "What people want most is autonomy over where they put their attention."

d. Studies report a 40% drop in empathy - which is the crucial ability to be present, put ourselves in the other person's shoes and imagine what they're feeling.

e. People rather text than talk - because online they can take their time to edit and get it RIGHT.

f. Even a silenced phone on a table changes the quality of conversation - because people are reluctant to go deep and be personal if they think they'll be interrupted.

g. Our inability to be alone with our thoughts and our fear of conversation ("It's so open-ended, I can't control it:) is the new "Silent Spring."

The good news is, this book is not just a cautionary tale. It has a prescription for how we can "make time and space for face-to-face."

An important book that can help readers re-connect with what and who is most important - each other.

Legs are for walking - The mouth is for the power of talking

A wonderful observation of how easily the world has become addicted to technology, smart phones, facebook, twitter, etc. If used properly and confidently new age tools can be so extraordinary; however when you feel like you have no sense of self unless you are connected online in some form, carefully check the mirror to see if you still reflect Who You Really Are. Sherry Turkle does an outstanding job in her book Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk. Talking is our golden nugget to relating to each other. It gives real to the feel of being. From Publishers Weekly
In this latest in the One Minute Manager series, the authors chastise executives who never have time for family or their own job enhancement because they accept too many responsibilities--"monkeys" clinging to their backs--that properly belong to their staffs. Based on seminars conducted by the late Oncken, the book explains in simple-minded if abstract terms how to achieve a balance between supervision and delegation for reduced tension and improved productivity. "There is a high correlation between self-reliance and morale," stress the authors. With humor and logic they describe the delicate business of assigning monkeys to the right masters and keeping them healthy, i.e., fed and cared for: " . . . if monkeys are managed properly, you don't have to manage people so much." Unequivocal assignments, proper coaching and interim check-ups, according to this program, can lead to effective delegation and, with it, a better life at home and office. BOMC selection.

Stopping the Source of the Bureaucratic Stall
By Donald Mitchell
Many people in an organization focus on managing the boss rather than doing their own job. What better way to manage the boss than to constantly seek her/his guidance on everything? Then, the boss can be flattered that you want his/her help, and will also take the blame if anything goes wrong. Insecure bosses like to be involved, so that fewer "errors" occur.
This wonderful book points out that no one can learn without making errors. Also, if you and your subordinate are doing the same job, one of you is superfluous. A common source of stalled thinking in this area is focusing on the fact that you, as manager, can do the job better and faster than you can teach the task or job to someone. What managers fail to realize is that someone closer to the source of the problem should be able to come up with a better solution. Also, the time taken to teach someone else to do the task is usually much less over a year or two than the time taken to help someone learn the task.
The key problem is that we all like to fall back on doing what we are comfortable with and are good at rather than new challenges where we are not so competent. Banish that feeling!
This book gives you lots of practical ideas for how to respond to efforts by your subordinates and colleagues to delegate their work and responsibility to you. You will learn how to see them coming and to keep the monkey where it belongs: with them.
If you find that you are pressed for time, this book is an important source of ideas to free up your life to have less stress while you and your organization both accomplish more.
Good luck with taking care of your monkey business! It's an important step toward developing an irresistible growth enterprise.

A new way to work less and be more efficient
By Sami Fgaier
The one minute manager's symbol, a one-minute readout from the face of a modern digital watch, is intended to remind each of us to take a minute out of our day to look into the faces of the people we manage. The monkey manger's symbol a stressed manager overwhelmed by a desk full of problems, is intended to remind us to constantly discipline ourselves to invest our time on the most vital aspects of management rather than dilute our effectiveness by "doing more efficiently those things that shouldn't be done in the first place." What follows, is a story of a manger who worked long hours and never seemed to get caught up with all the work he had to do. He learned about monkey management and how not to take initiative away from his people so they can care for and feed their own monkeys. In the process, he learned to be more effective in dealing with his own manager and the demands of his organization. The performance of his department drastically improved, as did the prospects for his career. The authors hope is that you will use what you learn in this book to make a difference in your life and the lives of the people you interact with at work and at home.

This book's been a big help for me.
By Ken Wells
I am a man, so I can only attest to the male perspectives and observations in this book. It was alarming how much insight I got about myself. And better ways to listen and communicate with my lovely wife. It's been a big help for me.

The book repeats a lot. And normally, I think that's bad writing. But, I'm pretty sure I needed to hear some of the same things again and again. Big insight.

I bought this book because I read Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus, which helped me understand my husband more. That book has been a great asset in our marriage and I'm looking forward to reading this. We don't believe in divorce so we are in it forever. We are not perfect and all could use some great tips.

From Publishers Weekly
A Russian immigrant girl adjusts to the American celebrations of Thanksgiving and birthdays, respectively. Ages 5-8; 6-10.
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

Gr 1-3-Molly, a young Russian Jewish immigrant, feels that she doesn't belong and will never belong in America. Her third grade classmates make fun of her accent, her dress, her customs and mock her with a sing-song rhyme, "Jol-ly Mol-ly, Your eyes are awf'ly small. Jol-ly Mol-ly, Your nose is awf'ly tall." With the help of a loving mother and the understanding of a sensitive teacher, Molly earns class recognition and, finally, happiness. Her clothespin Pilgrim doll resembles her Russian mother more than a traditional Pilgrim, for her mother is indeed a pilgrim who came to America for religious freedom. Christina Moore's dramatic reading intensifies the emotion and evokes the pathos of this moving narrative. Young listeners will sympathize and empathize with Molly and will gain a greater appreciation for all Pilgrims in America. This story will encourage dialogue and lively discussions on numerous topics: American values, tolerance, religious freedom, Thanksgiving traditions, Jewish customs and holidays. It will captivate an attentive audience every month of the year.

The wonderful book that brought me down low
By E. R. Bird
Ladies and gentlemen, I come before you today with a confession. I, knowingly and without malice, am a wimp. I am a wimp of the finest pedigree, forged in the wimpy steps of my wimpy forebears. This loathsome quality only cares to show itself in the oddest of moments. Normally, I feel relatively safe reading children's books and, especially, picture books. Certainly the protagonists in these tales have their trials and tribulations to endure, but they usually do so with relative good faith and their enemies are by and large trampled soundly at the end of their tales. Usually. Then there are books like, "Molly's Pilgrim". Ladies and gentlemen, if your child can read through this book in its entirety without feeling overwhelmed by a sense of misery and woe then they're a stronger man or woman than I.

In this classic tale, a little girl named Molly is having problems at school. Her classmates tease her relentlessly, usually making fun of her funny accent and supposed un-American ways. Molly, you see, immigrated to this country with her mother and father from Russia. Jewish in faith, they originally lived in New York City, but now Molly's father has found steady employment in Winter Hill. Here, Molly is the only Jewish girl around, and she suffers mightily at the hands of the other girls. One day, Molly's teacher, Miss Stickley, decides that the class is going to do something a little different for Thanksgiving this year. Each child will design a pilgrim or an Indian for a little diorama and present it to the class. Molly is assigned a pilgrim, and she eagerly tells the assignment to her mama. Her mother, however, listens to the description of what a pilgrim is (someone seeking religious freedom and a life free from persecution) and creates a doll that is a small Russian immigrant. Of course, the other kids at school deride this idea of a pilgrim, until Miss Stickley explains that Molly's doll is perhaps the most appropriate of all. After all, the very idea of Thanksgiving is based on the Jewish harvest holiday of Tabernacles, and unlike any other student in the room, Molly is the real pilgrim.

I have absolutely no problems with this story. I mean, how can you not like it? And how many adults, if you stopped them on the street today, would be able to tell you what Jewish holiday the pilgrims, that came to our land, based Thanksgiving on? Few, I suspect. Molly is an incredibly sympathetic character, and that's probably where my own problems stem from. After all, there's a significant lack of comeuppance in this tale. Molly suffers relentless teasing and problems from other children her age, but that's never really resolved. The evil Elizabeth is never reprimanded for her actions, nor even made to think twice about treating Molly like a human being. Instead, she's nasty from page one until the end and stays that way. Which, honestly, was probably the best way to go. I mean, vengeance doesn't really have a place in children's picture books, does it? But how hard would it have been for Elizabeth to get what's coming to her? Even a little?

What I had a hard time with in this story was Molly's pain. Barbara Cohen describes it beautifully, and we've plenty of gorgeous illustrations by Michael J. Deraney (if that's the version you're purchasing) showing Molly huddled in misery on a swing, running with tears in her eyes from the girls, crying on her Mama's chest, dreading entering her school building, and miserably hiding her doll when other children mock it. It's a lovely book, but distinctly and incredibly painful for me and, I suspect, for certain types of children. For some, however, this book will be a kind of balm. They will see that they are not alone in being teased by other kids, and that Molly suffers just as they suffer.

The story is excellent. The illustrations superb. The moral, unequivocal. If you would like an excellent tale to tell around the Thanksgiving season, you really couldn't find one better. Just be aware of what you're getting yourself into ahead of time. It's a great book, but for some people a distinctly depressing one.

The spirit of Thanksgiving is always with us.
By slomamma
The only negative thing I can think of to say about this book is that when I read it aloud, I have a very hard time not crying. It is a short and simple story (longer than a picture book, but an adult can read it aloud in one sitting, and most second or third graders could read it to themselves), but one of the most moving children's books I know of.
Molly is a turn of the century Jewish immigrant girl from Russia. She lives in a small town, where no one understands her, and other children make fun of her clothes, and accent and her ignorance of American customs. In November, her classmates are appalled that she has never heard of Thanksgiving. But as we get to know Molly better, we, and eventually her classmates, realize that this child, who left her country and moved to America so that she and her family could practice their religion without fear is no different from the first pilgrims.
By the time they reach second or third grade, most children have heard the story of the first Thanksgiving many, many times. This is a wonderful way to renew the meaning of the story for them, by reminding them that people are still coming to American for the same reasons they came hundreds of years ago.

The True Spirit of Thanksgiving
By Erika Sorocco
Molly is a young, Jewish immigrant from Russia, who moves to Winter Hill where she is a black sheep among the rest of her classmates. They tease her, and call her names, making fun of her voice, and her eyes, and anything else that they could possibly think of to make fun of her. When Miss Stickley, Molly's third-grade teacher, begins teaching the class about Thanksgiving, Molly is lost. That is, until she finds that Thanksgiving is an American holiday where everyone is grateful for what they have. The problem? Molly doesn't feel thankful. In fact, the only thing that would make her thankful is if her family could move back to New York City, and that won't be happening anytime soon. When Miss Stickley informs the class that they must make pilgrim dolls, Molly is excited to do the project. But when she finds that her mother has made the doll look more like a Russian immigrant, rather than a pilgrim, Molly knows that her troubles at school are about to get worse. But maybe...just maybe, the little Pilgrim is exactly what Molly needs...

It is rare that a book as short as Barbara Cohen's MOLLY'S PILGRIM could bring out such strong emotions in the reader, but that is exactly what it did. The character of Molly is sweet, and kind, and the way she is treated at school could bring tears to anyone's eyes, even if you aren't a crier by nature. The awful songs that Molly's classmates sing about her will choke everyone up, but, at the same time, let the reader feel exactly how people who are "different" are treated. This is a wonderful story that will warm everyone's heart, and teach the whole family about the first Thanksgiving.
