Didn't reach as high as I was expecting
By Racaim
I am seriously struggling to complete this first novel let alone go through all this drama for another 3 books. I love the whole concept behind this story line. It is intriguing, certainly different and Pearce is not the normal Billionaire that you would expect. Rachel however... ugh she annoys the living hell out of me. Doormat material even though she wants to not be. I kind of found her to be childish and skipped through areas that just revolved around her. The couple seemed to have come together quickly and attached so fast, I am really wondering what will fill another 3 books. There were parts to the writing that I found to be flat sometimes. Like space filling. Now and then I would feel the emotion that Pearce was feeling however Rachel was like cardboard to me. I know my review is against the norm compared to others but show some respect and don't slag me. I am a heavy reader and enjoy all genres and therefore entitled to my opinion. I like to enjoy a book and not skip through. I think Ms Everhart did a good job however I feel like there could have been far more emotion placed to the story, and well just.... more.

I wanted to give it a shot though and I am glad I did
By Amazon Customer
I have read the whole Jade series so I thought I check it out. At first I wasn't so sure because if you read the Jade Series you knew about Rachel and what happens. I wanted to give it a shot though and I am glad I did. At first I thought it was a bit slow but it really got good and kept me on reading and reading. I loved reading Pearce and Rachel's story. I love the way he treats her and how she treats him. I can totally see the traits Garrett got from both parents! I cannot wait for the next book! If you haven't read the Jade Series that's okay because you'll still understand it but for those of us who has it just adds to the story. Without giving out too much I hope the Pearce gets his HEA and that the author has something up her sleeve.

The Kensingtons are off to a great start!
By Chrissy C
I just discovered the Jade series a few months ago and when I was done reading them I was left so sad that I didn't have anymore to read about them, I was SO excited to find out about The Kensington series! Pearce has so many sides and it's been fun getting to know him better! I always knew I liked him! This book really shows you his struggle with his family and the organization but also the good side of him when he's with Rachel. I cannot wait to find out more about those two! And everything that happens to them. Keep those books coming Allie!

with this book I was left with the distinct impression that this book is most useful as an historical artifact
By Prof
This book is a collection of essays based on very outdated research. The majority of the references are from the early 1990s with many from the 1980s. It seems to me that someone put together a series of very old articles and made a book from it. When comparing the content with neuroscience since 2005, I found many theories that needed major revision and conclusions that would not be accepted today. By comparing Joseph LeDoux's popular book, Anxious, with this book I was left with the distinct impression that this book is most useful as an historical artifact. Very disappointing since it cost so much and the subject is important for our family.

Empires of the Indus: The Story of a River, by Alice Albinia

“Alice Albinia is the most extraordinary traveler of her generation. . . . A journey of astonishing confidence and courage.”—Rory Stewart

One of the largest rivers in the world, the Indus rises in the Tibetan mountains and flows west across northern India and south through Pakistan. It has been worshipped as a god, used as a tool of imperial expansion, and today is the cement of Pakistan’s fractious union. Alice Albinia follows the river upstream, through two thousand miles of geography and back to a time five thousand years ago when a string of sophisticated cities grew on its banks. “This turbulent history, entwined with a superlative travel narrative” (The Guardian) leads us from the ruins of elaborate metropolises, to the bitter divisions of today. Like Rory Stewart’s The Places In Between, Empires of the Indus is an engrossing personal journey and a deeply moving portrait of a river and its people. 18 illustrations

An amazing read
By ogreadmore
This book is a brilliant piece of writing and coming from someone so young, a great portent for the future. The writer is no mere traveller breezing through places in a superficial way and make pronouncements with the thinnest veneer of knowledge to guide her. Her writing has scholarly depth, shows great curiosity and wonderful impartiality as she wends her way through the Indus and Sindh, encountering various sects and peoples, and giving each side an equal say. We see flashes of the writer's droll sense of humor mixed in with genuine observation as in the instance when a Pakistani official complements her on her beautiful Urdu and across the border in India a Customs official hearing the same language, praises her "amazing Hindi."

In the first few chapters I thought that the writer's research, coupled with her contacts in Pakistan, were what made the writing thick with detail. A quarter of the way through the book it occurred to me that the reason why the work has depth is because Ms. Albinia speaks both Urdu and Hindi and what a world of a difference that makes. She is able to communicate with people from every level of society, from the feudal landlord to the peasants of Sindh, each of whom impart their own history. Her portrait of the Sheedis reveals a timeless people excluded from the knowledge of most Sindhis. Ms. Albinia never passes sniffy judgements on poverty or morality, but gracefully melds into a succession of households, high and low, treating each with respect and affection. Her stay in Afghanistan is negotiated with astounding grace and a sure footed understanding of genuine cross cultural communication. A quite remarkable thing indeed.

Ms. Albinia's portrait of the Indus and it's history shows very clearly that for hundreds of years Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam accommodated each other's perspective and lived in harmony. Her exposition of the various saints' 'urs' and the piety of the devotees shows what an enduring grip Sufi Islam has not only in Sindh, but in every province of Pakistan. The followers of Sufi Islam believe in a kinder, gentler Islam that treats all of creation with respect and humility and completely disavow the smash and grab violence of the Wahhabi perspective. This book should be required reading for anyone seeking to understand the current conundrums of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Interesting Historical Tidbits mixed with Travel Narrative
By MoneyMagnet2004
This book is as much about Pakistani culture as it is about the Indus river. The author journeys upstream along the Indus River, devoting a chapter to each of the significant historical movements in the river's history.

I enjoyed gleaning bits of history about the province of Sindh, the water-god Uderolal, the relationships between various classes of Pakistan, etc. especially since my ancestors are from Sindh. And yet, though the writing is good and the subject interesting, I found it tough going at times. I think this is because this book is torn between being history as well as a travel narrative.

Some of the chapters are much more coherent and cohesive than others. For example, the final chapter is among the best writing in the book. She describes her travel in Tibet and her travel companions with such clarity that the experiences really come alive.

The first couple of chapters -- about modern day Sindh and Pakistani society -- are also very good, and I enjoyed the information about Mohenjodaro. It made me want to read a book devoted to that subject entirely. This is the beauty of reading a book with such a vast range -- it gives you a taste of things so you can explore items of interest in greater detail elsewhere.

The author also enlightened me on the importance of a river in an agricultural society and how dams impact the societies along a river.

I recommend this book if you are interested in Pakistani or Indian culture. And if you are fascinated with rivers and their impact on societies, you will love this book.

I think the writer will mature and I look forward to her future works.

The Future Of Travel Writing
By tattooedmatt
Alice Albinia's "Empires Of The Indus" is a grand travelogue that actually served as my introduction into travel writing. The author provides a synthesis of the world of the Indus River, fusing academic writing and adept, intuitive and observant depictions of the people and places therein. In some cases, Albinia's writing serves as one of the latest (so far, at least) published records of a westerner visiting sites such as that of the Bamiyan Buddhas, while in others her writing is so vivid and packed with detail and realism that one almost feels they are part of a film crew following the author, especially towards the end of the novel, in Tibet.

Albinia seems to have a tendency to find herself in dangerous situations and seedy locations along the Indus - she is a brave traveller who hides her fear in some cases extraordinarily well (her life depends on it!) In fact, I may go so far as to say that her travels are all the more impressive given notions of sex and gender in Central Asia. Speaking fluent Urdu, she often has no problem finding guides and help, although the reader is always reminded how dangerous this trip is. Most impressive is Albinia's treatment of the Indus itself - the river is treated in a Braudelian manner, where it is viewed as more of a character that is constantly in the foreground, rather than a location (Braudel treated the Mediterranean in a similar way), and the book is structured in a longue duree style of writing that Braudel pioneered.

As Albinia's story moves forward in time, history is told in reverse, beginning with the most recent history and ending with the most ancient, as the author finds herself at the source of the river in Tibet. Only an academic writer, or even a storyteller, can appreciate the organizational and research skills necessary to pull this off successfully. More than a standard travelogue, "Empires Of The Indus" provides an environmental message by illustrating the hazards of water management, while simultaneously providing a solid, well written history that can be appreciated by casual readers, Asian historians, and Islamic and Near Eastern historians/anthropologists, environmental historians, or even comparative world historians. Rory Stewart, author of "The Places In Between", hails Albinia as the greatest travel writer of our time, and he may very well be right (although Stewart is no slouch, either.) I, for one, will be there if Albinia writes another book.

However many words there are for brilliant this is all of them!

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her ‘our little genius’. Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don’t like her. She jokes that she won’t bite, but they don’t laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children’s cells. She tells her favourite teacher all the things she’ll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn’t know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.

So. Mr Carey. I have been waiting for another book in another series, some folks will know what I mean, but I thought hey, this one will do to be going on with. Especially when good blogger friend Kate waxed lyrical about it and told me I must read it. Frankly it wasnt a hard sell..

This is an INCREDIBLY difficult book to review without spoilers – I had no idea why Melanie was so special going in, and I’m not going to tell you either, but special she is. And not just because this is a clever, fascinating, addictive story about – ha see you nearly had me – its about THINGS OCCURRING - but because she is ridiculously easy to love, so well written is she. In fact all of the characters pop right off the page for one reason or another. You will either want to protect them with your life or shoot them in the head. Often with no inbetween.

Its a horror story. But not really. Its a fantasy. But then, no not really. There is certainly love there. And loss. And some stand out scene setting. And a heck of a lot of jaw dropping moments. And don’t start reading it just before bed time. You won’t sleep. For various reasons…not all of which will have to do with how eager you are to find out what happens.

When I read a book like this it reminds me why I love to read. Utterly compelling, taking you away from the madness of the real world and into the madness of another…offering a new twist on a popular theme and getting you right at the heart. RIGHT at the heart. Its only the end of January but I would be MOST surprised if this one doesnt end up in my top 5 of the year. And trust me, choosing last years top 5 was hard enough..

PLEASE be careful which reviews you read of this one before you dive in my reading friends. It really is best arrived at with a beautiful blissful ignorance.

Highly Recommended. HIGHLY.

Happy Reading Folks!

An exceptional story, but ignore the synopsis; it's nothing like the writing in the book
By Inspiring Insomnia
The Girl with All the Gifts might be my favorite book of 2014 (so far). It’s certainly in my top 5. Before I discuss the book, I have to discuss the synopsis. I feel like I’ve been complaining about synopses a lot recently, usually because they don’t reflect the tone of the book. This is probably the most egregious example. The synopsis is written as though a very young child with a very limited vocabulary is speaking. You would rightfully assume that the book would be written in this same manner, but you would be wrong. WHY do marketers do this? Are they intentionally trying to turn off readers? I heard about this book from somewhere other than Goodreads, and I’m sure I would never had chosen to read it if he synopsis was all I had to go on. The main character is a 10 year old girl named Melanie, and I could understand the desire to write the synopsis in a young voice IF the MC had that same voice in a first person narrative. But that is not the case here. Melanie is a very intelligent girl, and the narrative is written with an intelligent tone in the third person and doesn’t reflect her voice at all.

Sorry to go on and on about this, but I don’t want the odd choice for the synopsis to discourage anyone from reading the book. Because ALL of you should want to read The Girl with All the Gifts, and I’m going to do my best to tell you why. I’m going to keep it vague, because you need to discover the secrets of the book for yourself.

The story is set in a post-apocalyptic society in the U.K. Melanie and other children attend school classes, which seems normal enough on the surface, but it soon become apparent that something is not quite right, both with the children and with this school. We get hints of the nature of these differences early on, but it takes some time to learn what caused the apocalypse and how Melanie’s world reached this point.

Melanie has what could be called a childhood crush on her favorite teacher, Miss Justineau. Miss Justineau sees something in Melanie that stands out from the other children, and she can’t help responding to Melanie’s adoration, even though she tries to keep an emotional distance. Miss Justineau differs greatly from the other adults in Melanie’s life who treat her with apathy, at best, and shocking cruelty, at worst. It’s not hard to see why Melanie feels such affection for her teacher. The scenes between Melanie and Miss Justineau are heat-breaking. Melanie craves physical and emotional affection, just like every child deserves. But Miss Justineau can only do so much without risking her life and Melanie’s.

The Girl with All the Gifts starts out so strongly, and I thought that there was no way the story could maintain this pace. I was wrong, because the latter part of the book was even better. Melanie makes a decision at the end that has enormous implications. It affected me so much that it took a little while before I could even pick up another book. But was it the right decision? I think so, but that doesn’t mean that I was emotionally prepared for it.

Public service announcement: The Girl with All the Gifts is published by Orbit, a division of Hachette, the publisher that Amazon is battling. If you choose to buy this book (and you should!). think twice about buying from Amazon. Aside from the obvious reasons, Amazon is selling this at list price. B&N, Powells, and possibly your local indie, too, are selling it for significantly less.

Note: I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Intelligent and well crafted genre fiction
By Sean the Bookonaut
Do yourself a favour and don’t read the back cover of The Girl With All The Gifts. It won’t ruin the story for you but to my mind, when an author goes to the trouble to set up a clever opening to a well ploughed genre and then marketing decides to undercut that by telling you exactly what the book is like, because hey the point is shifting books… well…

If you like post apocalyptic thrillers with a decent scientific conceit underpinning it and an engaging read, go out and buy this book. Go, do it now.

But if you if you don’t really care or if you are one of those folk who like to know what the story is about before you go and make your investment, read on. But I am going to spoil it. Well, spoil it as much as the back cover does anyway.

All Melanie has ever known, all that she can remember is her room, the classroom, the showers and the corridor. Each day men in uniform come and collect her and take her to the classroom. She has a few different teachers, but her favourite is Miss Justineau. Miss Justineau teaches them about poetry, and Greek myth. The other teachers tell them about the time before the Breakdown, before the Hungries and the wild Junkers.

The back cover of my edition of The Girl With All The Gifts quotes Jenny Colgan of the Sunday Times as labelling it “Kazuo Ishiguro meets The Walking Dead”. I haven’t read any Ishiguro but the link to The Walking Dead sits uncomfortably with me (but I understand it’s shorthand for “this book has Zombies, shambling fans of the Walking Dead will love it”) or certainly not the most apt genre comparison one could make. I’d say it shares a family resemblance to certain works by Richard Matheson.

So yes it has Zombies. It has survivor tension and there is a race on to find a cure for the Hungry pathogen. As much as I like The Walking Dead, The Girl With All The Gifts is a much tighter and tense piece of work(maybe this is where the Ishiguro reference exerts itself) . The action set pieces are limited and brutal but this book earns praise for the maintaining the tension between the Survivors and drip feeding information about the Breakdown and the work towards a cure. This is no endless trudge, this book has a resolution, it has a finishing point and if you are very clued in to the hints Carey drops you might anticipate it. Looking back it’s a wonderful structured book with characters that we want to succeed against the worst Hungries and Humanity can throw up. It’s that hope I think that in the end masks the clues that Carey has dropped.

From a gender perspective The Girl With All The Gifts was good. The lead character is a young girl. The two scientists at the base where the story begins are female, two of the named teachers are female. Of the main cast three out of the five are women. Plenty of women talking to women about things other than men, sometimes not nice things but…

I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw it movie form. I am not sure that it would survive the Hollywood concept of what makes for a good movie though. The Girl With All The Gifts is intelligent and well crafted genre fiction, and while I could put it down, it was very compelling and a joy to return to.
