“Spicy, fast, and enthralling . . . a breathless read.”
–Julia London, author of The Perils of Pursuing a Prince

About the Author
Monica McCarty’s interest in the Scottish clan system began in the most unlikely of places: a comparative legal history course at Stanford Law School. After a short but enjoyable stint practicing law, she realized that her legal vocation and her husband’s transitory career as a professional baseball player were not exactly a match made in heaven. So she traded in her legal briefs for Scottish historical romances with sexy alpha heroes. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and their two young children. If You Liked the First Book, You'll Be Disappointed
By Baazumi
Having thoroughly enjoyed "Highlander Untamed", I was eager to begin "Highlander Unmasked" and for the first chapter I was delighted. However, as the story progressed or should I say as the subjective thoughts of the characters progressed, I could barely get through the book. I found myself skipping page after page filled with nothing more than the Alex's and Meg's personal musings about how they felt about themselves and each other. This type of non-dialog between the characters made up the bulk of the book. What a disappointment after reading the first book! What made "Highlander Untamed" so good is the story was the focus of the book and the subjective thoughts and feelings of the characters were well balanced within the story. Not so with "Highlander Unmasked" - this book was burdened down with redundancy, restating the same thoughts and feelings over and over and OVER again, the same trap most, but not all, (never Julie Garwood) romance writers seem to fall into. This constant restating of personal subjectivity seems to be a cop out on writing the STORY. What a shame, this book showed such promise. Had the story focused more on Alex and less on Meg, it would have worked much better and grounded the story; it was after all called "Highlander Unmasked". Although in the beginning Alex was strong and manly, as the story unfolded Alex was basically dazed and confused most of the time, and the easy charismatic nature brought out in the first book was gone. Meg was nosy and pushy, with little discrimination and undermined Alex's efforts to the point he was more in danger from her meddling than from his enemies. In the first book, Rory and Isabelle were strong defined characters. You got a strong sense of Rory as a man and Isabelle faced her flaws and made conscious decisions to come up against herself and work through them. In this book, Alex and Meg are fragmented, whiny, and constantly conflicted characters for the most part, and there's way too much of Meg. What showed great promise disappointed greatly.

Enjoyable
By Carol A. Spradling
Meg MacKinnon has to marry in order to defend her clan's holdings. Faced with a deadline to achieve marital bliss, she heads to court in search of a husband. Alex MacLeod must keep his identity and purpose hidden. Too bad for him that Meg recognizes him as one of the men who aided her and her mother during a roadside attack.

Ms McCarty does a wonderful job bringing these characters to life. Meg and Alex are both strong, very likable, but not over powering.

I did feel there were times when the story bogged down with details and I rolled my eyes at a few phrases. But, the author did stay focused on the plot and kept the action moving.

This is my first read of this author and I have already scribbled a note to myself listing the title of her next book to go in my tbr pile.

For Love or Duty...........an agonizing & sizzling sequel
By Misuzmama
Never has a man held such a burden. In Alex MacLeod's mission hangs the fate of his Highland people, a way of life. He must do everything in his power to prevent the King's plan to colonize the Highlands with Lowlanders. In Edinburgh, Alex uses his cunning, stealth and charm to disguise where his loyalties lie. The King's men, not knowing of the serpent lying in their midst, reveal the details of their mission. Only a beguiling woman stands in his way. A woman who awakens a need in him he never new existed with the power to devastate his mind, body, soul and the fate of his people.

Never has a woman held such a burden. Meg MacKinnon holds the fate of her clan in her hands. With an ailing father, she needs to find a trustworthy and loyal husband who will support her simple brother as chief. The Edinburgh court holds her answer, that is until she attacked on her journey there. Amidst the horror of the battle she is saved by a mysterious highlander, whose visage -days later- she cannot forget. An encounter at court with the brother of a neighboring clan chief raises her suspicions. A man with honor, strength and loyalty? Although she may wish it, he is not a man for her. A mercenary is not the man to support her brother and help lead her people. How could a man who displays sweet tenderness and love be loyal to no one? Meg has her doubts and will stop at nothing until her highlander is unmasked.

I love these types of books. A book where the hero has to make a life altering decision -his people vs his woman. *Sniff* Lots of roller coaster of emotions here. *semi spoiler* Just as he realizes that he loves her, he must be cruel and push her away in the worst way possible. His duty to his people comes before his heart. This comes just as heroine finally realizes that she has found true love. Not just a another duty that she humbly has accepted for all these years. The devastation is immediate. The reader is sucked into a whirlwind of emotion. Rooting for the highland people and for the love of the H/H -seemingly impossible.

So if you like highlander tales (seriously, who doesn't like those sexy Scots? ;))with a bit of bittersweet and tender emotion added to the mix then you love this one. A deluge of historical detail, which I found fascinating. Great characterizations and an action filled plot that has several swoon worthy scenes. This can be read as a stand alone book. The prequel 'Highlander Untamed' is good (****), but I found this one even better.

As Good As It Gets In Terms Of Useful Information For Artist
By Nigel
If you have read "Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green" also by Wilcox, this is the de facto companion volume. In this he lays out systematically the various color schemes available to the artist and uses examples of great art to teach each scheme. Furthermore he analyzes each scheme in relation to the palette he teaches in "Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green." If, like me, you are a convert and use this particular palette, the analyses of the color scheme choices is so helpful that it literally revolutionizes the way you will be able to simplify your color choices. The main thing is that one should first get a copy of "Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green.' If you are detrermined to go straight for this book, the color swatches from "Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green" are reproduced in the back of the book. If you are a working artist, make sure you have the following palette on hand: Cadmium Yellow (light or Pale), Lemon or Hansa Yellow Light, Cadmium Scarlet or Cadmium Red Light, Permanent Rose or Quinacridone Rose, French Ultramarine or UltraMarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Winsor Blue red shade or Pthalocyanine Blue (or Prussian Blue), Pthalocyanine or Winsor Green blue shade, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna (white--except if using watercolor). He has a website [...] in which paints and a special organizing palette can be ordered if one so desires. These books are as good as it gets in terms of useful knowledge for the artist.

Good content, but very poorly edited
By A Customer
This book has beautiful color plates of the work of other artists. It provides useful analysis of how and why their color schemes work. Wilcox gives practical advice you can put to work immediately.

My big complaint is that the editing of the text is simply awful. As with Wilcox's other book, Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green, it appears that he is self-published and probably self-edited. This is a pity. He often splices fragments into a sentence that doesn't work. This and other grammatical errors abound: unclear pronoun references, excessive use of passive voice, etc. Often a key point Wilcox is trying to make is obscured because it is so ambiguously worded as to require re-reading several times. You may never be sure if you've correctly understood his intended meaning. His book contains many redundancies. It lurches inconsistently in tone, sometimes formal and impersonal, sometimes chatty and conversational. In addition, the flow of ideas from one topic to the next within a chapter and from chapter to chapter seems a little illogical and confusing. It's a pity Wilcox doesn't submit his work to a professional editor.

Wilcox illustrates variations on some of his suggested color harmonies by indexing a series of colored thumbnail compositions to color swatches at the back of the book. The swatches may be valuable in themselves as mixing guides. But I found Wilcox's indexing notation both cumbersome and confusing. More to the point, I would figure out the notation if the thumbnails were more appealing. They have been of little help in suggesting useful color combinations because most of them are ugly to me. Many are downright garish. This is not a complaint I would have expected for a book entitled "Perfect Color Choices for the Artist."

Even with all these faults, Wilcox makes valuable and useful points. The reproductions can be a pleasure to browse, provided you can stay out of the brambles of Wilcox's often tortured text.

I learned from this and Wilcox's other book. I would buy it again--as disappointed as I am that it falls so far short of its potential.

Repeat of Existing Knowledge
By Remi Engels
This book does not contain anything new. All content has been published in hundreds if not thousands of other publications. A quick internet search will convince you of this. Also, the book is badly edited. Hundreds of repetitions of the same argument can be found. Also, the same exposition is repeated for every color. Unless you are writing for 5th graders such duplication is just a waste of paper. The whole thing is poorly executed. It was a waste of money.

Ancillary Mercy is the stunning conclusion to the New York Times bestselling trilogy and winner of the Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel.

For a moment, things seemed to be under control for Breq, the soldier who used to be a warship. Then a search of Athoek Station's slums turns up someone who shouldn't exist, and a messenger from the mysterious Presger empire arrives, as does Breq's enemy, the divided and quite possibly insane Anaander Mianaai - ruler of an empire at war with itself.

Breq refuses to flee with her ship and crew, because that would leave the people of Athoek in terrible danger. The odds aren't good, but that's never stopped her before.

Review
"If you don't know the Ancillary series by now, you probably should. Ann Leckie's sociopolitical space opera almost singlehandedly breathed new cool into the stereotype of spaceships trundling through far-off systems amid laser battles. ... [Ancillary Mercy] earns the credit it's received: As a capstone to a series that shook genre expectations, as our closing installment of an immersively realized world, and as the poignant story of a ship that learned to sing."―NPR Books on Ancillary Mercy

"This trilogy will stand as a classic of sf for the ages."―Library Journal on Ancillary Mercy

"Powerful."―The New York Times on Ancillary Sword

"The sort of space opera audiences have been waiting for."―NPR Books on Ancillary Sword

"No science-fiction series as descriptive of our current political and cultural moment or as insistent that we open our eyes to it."―Slate on Ancillary Mercy

"Fans of space operas will feast on its richly textured, gorgeously rendered world-building."―Entertainment Weekly on Ancillary Sword

"A magnificent capstone to this promising trilogy."―RT Book Reviews (4.5 stars) on Ancillary Mercy

"Breq's struggle for meaningful justice in a society designed to favor the strong is as engaging as ever. Readers new to the author will be enthralled, and those familiar with the first book will find that the faith it inspired has not been misplaced."―Publishers Weekly on Ancillary Sword

"Leckie proves she's no mere flash in the pan with this follow-up to her multiple-award-winning debut space opera, Ancillary Justice."―Kirkus on Ancillary Sword

"This follow-up builds on the world and characters that the author introduced in the first book and takes the story in new directions. There is much more to explore in Leckie's universe, one of the most original in SF today."―Library Journal (starred review) on Ancillary Sword

"An ambitious space opera that proves that Justice was no fluke.... a book every serious reader of science fiction should pick up."―RT Book Reviews on Ancillary Sword

"A gripping read, with top-notch world building and a set of rich subtexts about human rights, colonialism -- and (yes) hive mind sex."―io9 on Ancillary Sword

"Leckie investigates what it means to be human, to be an individual and to live in a civilized society."―Scientific American on Ancillary Sword

"Unexpected, compelling and very cool. Ann Leckie nails it...I've never met a heroine like Breq before. I consider this a very good thing indeed."―John Scalzi on Ancillary Justice

"Superb... Sword proves that [Leckie]'s not a one-hit wonder. I look forward to the rest of Breg's tale."―St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Ancillary Sword

"Ancillary Justice is the mind-blowing space opera you've been needing...This is a novel that will thrill you like the page-turner it is, but stick with you for a long time afterward."―io9 (included in 'This Fall's Must-Read Science Fiction and Fantasy Books')

"It's not every day a debut novel by an author you'd never heard of before derails your entire afternoon with its brilliance. But when my review copy of Ancillary Justice arrived, that's exactly what it did. In fact, it arrowed upward to reach a pretty high position on my list of best space opera novels ever."―Liz Bourke, Tor.com

"Establishes Leckie as an heir to Banks and Cherryh."―Elizabeth Bear on Ancillary Justice

"A double-threaded narrative proves seductive, drawing the reader into the naive but determined protagonist's efforts to transform an unjust universe. Leckie uses...an expansionist galaxy-spinning empire [and] a protagonist on a single-minded quest for justice to transcend space-opera conventions in innovative ways. This impressive debut succeeds in making Breq a protagonist readers will invest in, and establishes Leckie as a talent to watch."―Publishers Weekly on Ancillary Justice

"Using the format of SF military adventure blended with hints of space opera, Leckie explores the expanded meaning of human nature and the uneasy balance between individuality and membership in a group identity. Leckie is a newcomer to watch as she expands on the history and future of her new and exciting universe."―Library Journal on Ancillary Justice

"A sharply written space opera with a richly imagined sense of detail and place, this debut novel from Ann Leckie works as both an evocative science fiction tale and an involving character study...it's also a strongly female-driven piece, tackling ideas about politics and gender in a way that's both engaging and provocative...Ancillary Justice is a gripping read that's well worth a look."―SFX (UK) on Ancillary Justice

"It engages, it excites, and it challenges the way the reader views our world. Leckie may be a former Secretary of the Science Fiction Writers of America, but she's the President of this year's crop of debut novelists. Ancillary Justice might be the best science fiction novel of this very young decade."―Justin Landon, Staffer's Book Review on Ancillary Justice

"The sort of book that the Clarke Award wishes it had last year ... be prepared to see Ancillary Justice bandied around a lot come awards season. (As it should be)."―Jared Shurin, Pornokitsch

"Total gamechanger. Get it, read it, wish to hell you'd written it. Ann Leckie's Ancillary Justice may well be the most important book Orbit has published in ages."―Paul Graham Raven on Ancillary Justice

The Quality of MERCY is Pretty Darn High
By Jim Henley
Toward the end of Ancillary Mercy, our heroine Breq, a.k.a. the former warship AI Justice of Toren and the former corpse-soldier AI Justice of Toren One Esk Nineteen, remarks, in narration, that "It never hurt to be polite." If we take "polite" to mean "considerate" - not just aping the forms of courtesy but treating others with due regard - the sentence will serve as a keystone to the whole trilogy. There's a lot of the first sort of politeness in Mercy, the conclusion of what Ann Leckie has called her "[C.J.] Cherryh-flavored space opera." Leckie is terrific at writing about political infighting obscured by politesse, and one of the pleasures of the book is how everyone's masks finally slip as this skirmish in the interstellar civil war reaches a crisis point. But consideration is a rarer commodity, and what makes Breq not just a protagonist but a heroine is that she works to spread consideration around. The first book began with Breq interrupting her mission of vengeance to perform an act of decency she could easily have avoided. By this last book, the cumulative sum of all her small acts of decency is to find herself responsible for the inhabitants of two star systems and having to consider giving up the things she cares about most to protect them.

I loved this book. I read it in two nights, and wished I could skip work to finish it faster. It's funny and touching and suspenseful by turns. It's less action-packed than Justice or Sword, even though there is a very original sort of starship battle at one point and a covert assault at another. There's quite a bit of Breq dealing with the officers and crew of her starship. That can get talky, but way less so than in, say, Starship Troopers. There are hilarious set-pieces with the sort-of human translator for the mysterious and terrifying aliens, the Presger, of whom the entire galaxy goes in fear. More than in the previous volumes, Leckie foregrounds the characters of the various AIs. And yes, there is quite a lot of tea. Part of me thought there was actually a bit more tea in the middle of the book than I strictly needed. Another part of me accepts that, like the much-discussed pronoun choices, the weird centrality of tea to the narrative is a crucial part of the worldbuilding. (And there are hints this time that what Breq calls tea and what we call tea may not be quite the same thing. I notice that people perk up awfully fast after drinking it; Earth teas don't have super-high levels of caffeine.)

This is also, for my money, the book where Leckie masters endings. I loved both of Ancillary Mercy's predecessors, but I thought each of them ended a bit clumsily. Mercy's ending isn't by any means what I expected, but it works well as a conclusion to both novel and trilogy, and I didn't find myself wondering "Why did so-and-so even think that plan would work?" like I did with the previous two books. And that earns Mercy its fifth star. This book was everything I hoped for. I recommend it to fans of the previous two books in the series without reservation.

Not my cup of tea
By Beth Pedersen
Honestly, I really preferred the first book the most. It was full of action, and the last two books were full of tea. Some of the reviewers here seem to like the change of pace. Unfortunately, I would not have bought the last two knowing there was going to be a huge change. I'm just not a fan of long, drawn out scenes with little action or suspense. There wasn't even much drama either, aside from Seivarden's lovers quarrel.

It's really hard to describe my disappointment without Spoilers, so...

Spoilers!

While I understood why Seivarden and Breq didn't get together, I was still vehemently hoping for it anyway. I know it seems silly, but I really felt there was no meaningful wrap up of Seivarden's dependence and love. Just some other character to fill the void somewhat.

I felt the issue of turning more humans to ancillaries didn't get fully resolved. It was simply try out more humans for now, possibly clone the ancillaries you have despite difficulties, or thaw out the ones you have in rations. Didn't explore the idea of running out in spite of these measures. Would the ships then start making their own? Possibly new series?

Also I just felt that after everything that happened, it was a bit harsh for Tisiwarat to turn out more like the Raadch ruler, like trying to force ship compliance, in spite of everything that Breq physically did and said to show why that is a problem. I was hoping for more change from that character.

Oh Tree, Eat the Fish Already.
By Ernest Lilley
I wanted to love Ancillary Mercy, but even though I enjoyed it well enough, it suffers from comparison to the first book in the series, Ancillary Justice. Then again, it's a step up from the middle book, but middle books, like middle children, have a thankless job to do.

Breq, the former ancillary element of the Justice of Toren is now the captain of a warship sent by the Emperor she reviles to keep peace in a star system comfortably far away from the palace. Breq's still of the opinion she's not really a person, having had whoever she (and you'll recall "she" is the gender neutral pronoun for all civilized people in this series) erased completely when her mind was mapped to the ship she crewed, becoming a part of the ship's consciousness, and after its destruction, the last remnant. That doesn't stop her from being self-righteous, which would be a problematic if the author wasn't so firmly on her side.

Breq's not out to cause trouble, just to undo the rampant inequities in the society she's dropped into, and as captain, no Fleet Captain, her word carries a lot of weight. So do her songs.

Did I enjoy Ancillary Mercy. Yes, definitely. I miss the literary device that the first book's ancillary perspectives afforded, as well as the grittier person that Breq was at the beginning. Here she's mellowed and is growing into a more nurturing person, though still happy enough to kill any troops the emperor(s) send her way. The alien gun she's been toting since the first book is a bit of a cheat, and here it's largely used to avoid having to deal with actual space warfare. I'm not crying for the lack of corpusculating shields and beams of colossal energy, but still.

While the first book stood on its own merits, the following two seem more vehicles for societal chiding than good science fiction. Ultimately, Ms Leckie falls victim to both Rousseau's and Ian Bank's visions for our salvation, and as much as I'd like to believe in either, my faith falls short. She's no Le Guin, though Ancillary Justice came close.

So, I'm ambivalent. I've read it twice so far and its a good enough read. It's just not as smart as it thinks it is.

But you know, those songs, or song fragments, do kind of get stuck in your head.

"Oh tree, eat the fish."

(Note: I read this as an ARC, but I've bought the kindle version now that it's out)

Beautiful Book

I had been wanting this book for a long time, and now that I finally have it, I'm in love with it. The artwork is gorgeous, it was one of the things that stuck with me even after I finished the game, and having it all compiled in this book is fantastic. The lore and excerpts were great, I absolutely love the world of Dishonored. It's one of my favorite games ever, and this book is a true gem that I am delighted to have on my shelf. I'm even more excited for Dishonored 2 now! I NEED IT!!

5 glowing stars.

Revisit Dunwall again
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:37798b15f453910d588edef43693bbbf]]Dishonored: The Dunwall Archives is a nice companion book that adds to the story of Dishonored through excerpts gathered from individuals from Dunwall and other sources.

The book's a hardcover somewhere between A4 and A5 size. The 212 pages are filled with a mixture of artworks and text.

The excerpts could be stuff like lyrics to the songs sang by sailors, dialogue from a theatre plays, observations from travelers' journals, Overseer's findings, etc. All these provide pieces of information that adds to the world created by the game. You'll be able to learn more about certain people, government officials, the Empress, Rat Plague, whaling or even how to operate a butcher's saw. Basically, you get a different perspective of how things are, the other side of the story as told from various sources.

The artworks are wonderful. Unfortunately, there isn't a dedicated artbook for the game, so you'll have to make do with the selected pieces of artworks included in this book, which are mostly full coloured concept art.

It's an interesting book of art and fiction of Dunwall by Arkane Studios and Bethesda Softworks. Recommended to Dishonored fans.

This is not an art book
By DomZ
Seems Arkane Studios is gonna keep the game's breathtakingly beautiful artworks in their vault for longer time. This is not an art book, this is a novel-size essay collection with pictures, basically 50% texts, 50% artworks. It includes the notes and novels you can find in the game, printing them nicely in this book.

Pros
- High-quality printing
- Contains a few artworks and texts that never seen before

Cons
- This is NOT an art book T_T

Though it's the only official Dishonored print available. Still Love it.

Amazon.com Review
There Are No Children Here, the true story of brothers Lafeyette and Pharoah Rivers, ages 11 and 9 at the start, brings home the horror of trying to make it in a violence-ridden public housing project. The boys live in a gang-plagued war zone on Chicago's West Side, literally learning how to dodge bullets the way kids in the suburbs learn to chase baseballs. "If I grow up, I'd like to be a bus driver," says Lafeyette at one point. That's if, not when--spoken with the complete innocence of a child. The book's title comes from a comment made by the brothers' mother as she and author Alex Kotlowitz contemplate the challenges of living in such a hostile environment: "There are no children here," she says. "They've seen too much to be children." This book humanizes the problem of inner-city pathology, makes readers care about Lafeyette and Pharoah more than they may expect to, and offers a sliver of hope buried deep within a world of chaos.

From Publishers Weekly
The devastating story of brothers Lafayette and Pharoah Rivers, children of the Chicago ghetto, is powerfully told here by Kotlowitz, a Wall Street Journal reporter who first met the boys in 1985 when they were 10 and seven, respectively. Their family includes a mother, a frequently absent father, an older brother and younger triplets. We witness the horrors of growing up in an ill-maintained housing project tyrannized by drug gangs and where murders and shootings frequently occur. Lafayette tries to cope by stifling his emotions and turning himself into an automaton, while Pharoah first attempts to regress into early childhood and then finds a way out by excelling at school. Kotlowitz's affecting report does not have a "neat and tidy ending. . . . It is, instead, about a beginning, the dawning of two lives." These are lives at a crossroads, not totally without hope of triumphing over their origin. ( Apr .

From School Library Journal
YA-- Life in Chicago's Henry Horner housing project robbed Lafeyette and Pharoah Rivers of their childhood and innocence. The crowded apartment housed LaJoe, six of her eight children, and a procession of needy relatives and friends. Bleaker than the overcrowding was the physical condition of the apartment; conditions outside were worse. Drug use, crime, shootings, and other violence were commonplace. Retribution sure and swift followed if someone saw or knew too much. Through his extensive research and his intimate friendship with the Rivers family, Kotlowitz paints a poignant, heartbreaking picture of life in the inner-city ghetto and the overwhelming odds children must overcome to break out of the vicious cycle of poverty and crime. A must-read for everyone. --Grace Baun, R. E. Lee High Sch . , Springfield, VA

Provocative Book
By Firestarter
This book is shocking, troubling, disgusting, and heartbreaking.

The author of this book follows two black boys who live in poverty in a crime ridden housing project in 1980s Chicago. Readers are left to feel sympathy for these children, who not for the stupidity and selfishness of their parents, might have otherwise grown up in a decent neighborhood with better opportunities.

While readers are left morning the lost lives of these children you cannot help but feel contempt for their parents (plural). Their mother began having children while she was young (14 to be exact). She raises her children in the SAME housing project where she grew up. In fact, it is the ONLY place she has ever lived. She has several children by the same man, who would rather shoot a needle in his arm, than use his modest (but good) paycheck to get his family out of the ghetto (and yes, he made enough money to purchase a modest home in a suburban community). His relationship with his children and their mother is that of a homeless person who is allowed to crash on a relative's sofa ever so often. He comes and goes as if he doesn't have any responsibility. The only real glimpse we get into his relationship with his wife is her blaming HIM for ruining her life (she doesn't take any responsibility for her poor choices in life). We learn that he had children outside of their marriage which is what caused the "come and go" relationship with his wife and family.

The family survives off welfare and public assistance. The mother doesn't work (supposedly because she can't due to her hand that was sliced up when she was attacked at knife point) and the father's paycheck goes toward his drug problem. Their poor children are left to survive almost completely on their own through legitimate odd jobs and selling drugs.

One by one the children in book (both main characters and their friends) become victims of poor parenting, poor environments, and poverty. The family's oldest children have their own children out of wedlock and eventually end up in prison. Their friends are murdered by rival gangs and the police. Their hosing project is riddled with gun fire during gang wars (so much so that the family has a "special" hiding place to prevent getting shot).

Readers will walk away from this book wondering what happened to the two boys who are the main characters (a little research and I discovered they both did time in prison for drug dealing...something they swore they would never do as children in this book) and you're left understanding the opposition to welfare, section 8 etc. This is a good book that shows almost everything wrong with the urban poor in inner cities.

A Dose of Reality
By Rich Murphy
I found this to be a telling account of one of America's most shameful faces: allowing our fellow citizens to live under such squalid conditions with no hope in sight. The author depicts realistically the story of one African American family in Chicago with a devoted mother, an impaired and absent father, and kids of indomitable spirit who are buffered by factors not of their own making.

Unfortunately, Ronald Reagan's image of welfare mothers driving Cadillacs persist today, perhaps even more so than when he spoke of it in the 80's. But this book explains the realities of good people in horrible circumstances, doing the best they can for their kids and the kids struggling to survive, never mind thrive, in incredibly bad circumstances.

I only hope that conditions have improved since this book was written...but I strongly suspect they haven't. Until we help people in these circumstances, America in its own right, will be a third world country, regrettably.

Good book. Sparks many questions
By William Fields
This was an outstanding book, especially, when read critically and analytically. I recommend diving into this book with this question in mind, "How do we fix it?" By "it," I mean the racial and ethnic problem in America that is clearly depicted within the "projects." More directly, ask yourself what problems do you see and how as a society and as an individual can we solve them. When reading with this question in mind, many ideas will develop and become clustered in your mind. With all the varying problems (drugs, the criminal justice system, gangs, lack of role models, etc) that are seen within the book, it may seem impossible to answer this question, however, as a society we must try. I recommend this book because it offers a great plot in addition to its educational value.

By reading this book, you will learn the business side of dentistry from a dentist with many years of experience in the field, and you will learn what you did not learned while in dental school but should have. After reading this book, I was motivated, inspired, and ready to start my own dental practice. The book serves as a template for any dentist interested in being his/her own boss! Dr. Logan also provides The Practice Management and Marketing Tools CD (sold separately) that has been extremely helpful to me in starting my own practice.
Thanks, Dr. Logan for sharing your vast management experience in the field of dentistry with us. As dentist, we need to learn more about the business side of dentistry as too not allow our noble profession to be hijacked by these powerful dental service organizations that to some are here to stay.

It's not my way or the highway but an explanation of positives and negatives of different choice he's made and experiences he's had. It has opened a world of questions and things to consider as we continue our journal in dentistry.

Test Your IQ
By Jusuf Hariman
An important new system of personal IQ assessment, this book is the most useful and thoroughly-researched offering on the subject since the ground-breaking bestsellers of H.J. Eysenck. The authors offer an informed and provocative essay on the whole question of intelligence, reviewing the latest techniques for its measurement. They argue that the assessment of IQ is often a much more inexact science than the layman usually supposes, but that it is still of considerable value in assessing a person's abilities. This is followed by a series of four tests. Each is designed to take one hour of undistracted concentration. Two of the tests contain 80 questions and two of them 40 questions. A test of mixed questions is followed by tests concentrating on sequences, patterns and puzzles. Each test has been validated against members of MENSA, the organisation whose members must have an accredited IQ of more than 150-the top 2% of the population.

Jose Raoul Capablanca is widely regarded as the strongest chess player who ever lived prior to Bobby Fischer. The authoritative work, “The Rating of Chess Players Past and Present” by Arpad Elo, inventor of the modern rating system, ISBN 0923891277, rates Capablanca as 2725, higher than any other player in history prior to Fischer. The great thing about Capablanca's style of play is he tended to play simple, direct moves, moves that even an amateur player can find over the board. José Raúl Capablanca y Graupera was the third World Champion, reigning from 1921 until 1927. Renowned for the simplicity of his play, his legendary endgame prowess, accuracy, and the speed of his play, he earned the nickname of the "Human Chess Machine". Jose Raul Capablanca was born in Havana. Capablanca's ideas are still relevant on the world stage of chess. His images are a powerful aid to the student board secrets. In this volume Harry Golombek, the distinguished chess correspondent of the times and one of Great Britain's leading players, has bought together Capablanca's Hundred Best Games. These will provide the expert as well as the beginner with a new insight into the master's extraordinary grasp of the game's fundamental strategic principles, the brilliance of his tactical development. Golombek's clearly written notes highlight the games most crucial phases and provide the reader with many interesting clues as to possible variations.

Synopsis
By Hugh Davies
First published in 1947. Jose Capablanca was a phenomenon who burst onto the chess world and took top prize in the first ever elite tournament in which he participated. This was at San Sebastian - otherwise known as Donostia - in the Basque country of Spain in 1911. Capablanca's style was serene - no position seemed to trouble him, and he crushed most of the established European grandmasters with seemingly little effort. Only against the mighty Lasker did he experience serious problems. Then in 1921 Capa - as he was known - obliterated Lasker in their world title match and took the championship without losing a single game. Other triumphs followed, such as London 1922, and Capablanca acquired the legend of an invincible superman when he went for 8 years without losing a game! His supreme moment was in New York 1927 - a quadruple round trial of strength between Capa himself Alekhine, Nimzowitsch and three other contenders for the crown. Capa whitewashed the field, creating a fresh masterpiece practically every day. Possibly this easy victory left him over-confident for later the same year he lost his world title to Alekhine.

Grandmaster Emeritus Harry Golombek was from his early days a worshipper at the shrine of Capablanca's genius. In this book he lucidly expounds the thinking behind the Cuban champion's greatest achievements and faithfully records every subtle nuance of his extraordinary ability to cut to the essence of what was truly transpiring amongst the myriad complexities of the chess board. If any player truly exemplified the classical style, it was Capablanca.

Harry Golombek was perhaps the king of chess writers. Chess correspondent for The London Times and The Observer, he possessed an unrivalled gift for transforming a chess game into an heroic saga with himself as the bard, singing the exploits of his chosen heroes of the mind. Several times British Champion, Golombek also played top board for England in the Olympiad and represented the British Chess Federation in the FIDE World Championship cycle. He was fluent in Russian and personally attended the World Chess Championships of 1954, 1957 and 1958 as a judge
