This is one of the core questions of epistemology, but it is often discussed in the abstract as if it were a question of purely theoretical interest arising for agents living nowhere and nowhen. David Coady takes epistemology out of the study and into the streets  by asking what  we   (as citizens of a more-or-less democratic societies) should believe now  (in the early 21st Century) about matters of political pith and moment.  A fine book, a fun book, and a book which might actually do a bit of good.

Useful in this age of information overload

Unlike the reviewer below I have read the entire book. Consequently I think I am in a better position to actually say something legitimate about the quality of 'What To Believe Now'.
'What To Believe Now' is a book about epistemology, otherwise known as 'theory of knowledge.' It is a book about applied epistemology, which is to say it discusses practical matters concerning beliefs. In particular it deals with subjects like conspiracy theories, expert testimony, wikipedia, blogs, and so on. The first chapter is the most theory laden part of the book and lays a general groundwork about what constitutes a belief. The rest of the book applies this theory to actual cases of belief formation and cases where what constitutes a right belief are called into question.
There are a number of excellent things about this book. The first excellent thing is that it is readable and engaging. It is the sort of book that one doesn't put down - it's like reading an addictive piece of fiction. In my experience this is highly irregular as far as philosophy books go: most philosophy books are dull and plodding. Not so for 'What To Believe Now' 'What To Believe Now' is a lively and readable piece of philosophy that happily contains a good dose of dry humour. In the same vein the book has the virtue of not being overlong. Some philosophy books are unnecessarily verbose and rambling - 'What To Believe Now' says what it has to say in an economical way and I cannot see how it could have been better said even if it had have had another 200 pages.
The second excellent thing about 'What To Believe Now' is the fact that it has some impact upon the sorts of beliefs we should hold, and therefore may have some impact on how we behave. For example, the book discusses what constitutes the right conditions for believing the testimony of others. It is easy to see how this discussion might contribute towards our day-to-day life. We are constantly being advised by people all the time and it is not always clear when and who we should believe. 'What To Believe Now' helps provide some grounds for guiding us through such issues. In this way, 'What To Believe Now' actually does a useful job in helping us decide what beliefs we should hold. This has other normative implications - once we know what beliefs to hold, this helps guide our actions. If we know we should reject the expertise of climate deniers then this will surely cause us to behave in different ways (we might petition the government more, use the car less, cycle to work more often, etc). To this extent 'What To Believe Now' has ethical implications and this is the case even if the book is ostensibly about epistemology. So the book is different from other philosophy books in another way: apart from actually being interesting it is also unusually pertinent and helpful in a way that other epistemology books are not. It is not solely about theory, it is also about action.
I highly recommend this book for anyone curious about what sorts of things we should believe in this age of information overload.

I can only second the comments of the last positive viewer. The book is excellent. Epistemology, especially among philosophy, can at times seem difficult to connect to issues of interest to non-philosophers. This book does.

Subtitled 'Country and City Fashion, 'Russian Elegance' brings a record of Russian fashion that is truly remarkable. The authors unveil what has hitherto been almost impossible to find. This revelation consists of Russian costume from the 15th to the early 20th centuries. It encompasses Old Russian Dress and National Costume from the 15th to the early 20th century and Urban Costume in Russia from the 18th to early 20th century. The text is informative and very interesting. The photographs of the costumes are superb. For years I have searched for a book on Russian peasant costume and I am very glad to find some excellent pieces shown in this book. I found all the areas of costume of interest whether they were from the Tsars, peasants or ecclesiastical. Jackets, coats, dresses, headdresses, shoes, handbags and more, all were of interest. The close up details are fantastic and include embroidery and earrings. This is an excellent resource for those interested in Russia, textiles or costume. a really beautiful book on Russian traditional fashion

This is a really lovely book on the fashion in the Russian State Historical Museum. It differs from a lot of other Russian fashion books in that it has a large section of historical costume worn by the peasants and middle class in the country. There's a lot of colorful and intricate festive dress on display and the book explains how town fashion influenced country fashion and vice versa over the centuries. The end section of the book concentrates on town haute couture fashion and includes examples of court dress, general town clothes for men and women and a dress worn by Empress Marie Feodrovna. If you are into antique fashion this book is wonderful eye candy.

Simply put, this book is spellbinding. The photography is so clear and precise, giving you an up-close look at the most beautiful and interesting clothing of the greatest centuries of Russian history. There is a glorious yet silent sadness and joy felt by Russians when seeing these reminders of what life used to look like on the streets and avenues and in homes and cafes. If you've never had a chance to visit the Russian museums where such historical clothing is on display, do not worry, because even if you were to go, you wouldn't get such a clear view as you will via this book. And the authors' commentaries are highly illuminating as well as fascinating, rich with so many facts and details. It's as if they are alongside you while reading the book, sharing their many brilliant thoughts and ideas.

Nice ideas but not spectacular

Nice ideas but not spectacular. I like books like this for inspiration though and sparking other ideas. The pictures are good and instructions are very good. The book itself is very nice; just not projects that overall make me feel like I can't wait to start building!

The code is actually for the arduino micro controller! Good book.

The previous reviewer was mistaken as to the "error" In the book. The page of code is actually for the arduino micro controller that the project requires. Simple enough. That being said, it is an interesting book with great pictures. Also, as was not the case in DIY Furniture (I.), the measurements have been converted to the US customary measurement system; one less step to worry about as you try to conquer these projects!

great book!

loved it (I do think I liked the first one a bit more simply because the projects seemed more interesting and all were things I would attempt while this volume was more to feature the artists) and I hope a third is in the works. while it's true you might be able to find things like this on the web, it's great having it all in one place along with a list of necessary components and step by step, clearly written instructions, photos and, diagrams.

So, so, so, good. Satisfying *and* fun.

Wow. I've read L. Ron Hubbard previously, but some how this book got past me. I can't believe it.

If I use the word epic, please know that I am NOT exaggerating. I'll conceded, Hubbard was no Tolkien, but I cannot help but repeated make comparisons (in that epic sense) between Battlefield Earth and the LOTR books. The plot arcs are well constructed - you are lead to expectation, and then a satisfying resolution. But, more and more often, I found myself anticipating the resolution, looking to my Kindle app and thinking... "What? How can I ONLY be 30% of the way through?"

This book is something I realized I've missed: a 1000 (or more) page book where you actually WANT to read to the end. As a heavy Kindle reader, I've become accustomed to the mini-bite books that Kindle authors churn out, much like the serial novels of the 19th century.

I began reading Battlefield Earth in preparation for reading through it with my boys this winter as part of our schoolwork. It didn't take long before I was reading for my own pleasure. Love the characterization, love the speculation on the future of mankind, love the metaphors of how current practices may be impacting humanity right now. I KNOW my boys are going to love the story, and as a homeschooling mom, I am just LOVING all the teachable moments I'm finding through the book.

Edited to add two things:

First, I purchased the Kindle edition of this book to read, and I also purchased the Audible version to listen to on a car trip. Later, the publisher sent me a trade paperback version for review purposes on my blog. I wrote this review PRIOR to receiving the hard copy, but I'm still putting this disclaimer in the interests of full disclosure.

Second, since I posted this, my oldest son started reading Battlefield Earth at my suggestion. He is carrying his Kindle *everywhere* so he can continue to read at any given moment of free time. What really surprised me, though, was finding out that my two younger sons (11 and 9) have ALSO started reading the book. Apparently (it happens), I sent the book to all of their Kindles (sometimes I send files to the wrong Kindle, sometimes I do it on purpose and forget... this isn't a new thing in and of itself). One of my sons is just not really a reader. Reading for recreational purposes is simply not his go-to. But, he had started listening to the audiobook on our car trip, and decided he wasn't waiting for the rest of the story.

Humorous colored-pencil cartoons reveal the devastation caused by the wee pooch and the family's reactions to the chaos left in his wake. Chewy Louie's exuberance is almost palpable and his teeth marks are everywhere. He's depicted as a small black dog with a pink tongue hanging out one end while his other end wags so vigorously that he appears to have multiple tails. Readers are left with the tiniest doubt about Louie's newfound maturity upon discovering that a corner of the last page has been chewed off. An entertaining tale about an all-too-common situation.

very funny and adorable story

If you have ever owned a puppy that chewed you will love this adorable story. I got this book for my grandchildren who have two dogs and they loved it and wanted their Mom to read it over and over again. The story about the puppy who chewed everything is really funny and the pictures are adorable.

This book isn't my least favorite, nor my favorite. It's about a puppy that chews everything... he's a monster! But like all puppies, and all children, he grows up. It's a cute book, just not one that we reach for often.

Heart breaking

If you're interested in learning a little about the Chinese side POW stories from the Korean war in the 50's, this is a great book to read.
Fiction or not, the stories are quite vivid. I believe most of the stories are based on some true stories told by real POW.
Personally, I do not understand the true meaning behind any war but the anguish of a tormented soul is very familiar and very human.

"It matters what you call a thing."

“Until now, now that I’ve reached my thirties: / All my Muse’s poetry has been harmless: / American and diplomatic.” It’s hard not to hear underpinning this passage, which opens the poem “Desired Appreciation,” the suggestion that for something to be accepted as American it must go along with the current, must uphold the status quo—the exact opposite of how art functions, which is by disruption. And lest there be any misunderstanding, I’ll clarify—Solmaz Sharif’s Look is a book that disrupts, fervently and effectively. The poems within are allergic to complacency and linguistic hypnosis; they constantly reach, inquire, prod, and wonder—sometimes with force—and refuse to allow the reader to be lulled into the sense that everything is okay in the world.

The first words of Look make the author’s intents known in no uncertain terms: “It matters what you call a thing.” Unflinching is a term overused when describing writers, particularly poets, but if there’s a book deserving of this phrase, it’s Look; Solmaz Sharif is insistent that the reader understand that there is something awry, something lurking below the surface level of today’s media and discourse, and she’s going after it without hesitation.

The poems in Look are interested in challenging the way we hear about and consider war by dismantling the language used when describing or reporting on it. Formally, the poems are concerned with euphemistic language; thematically, they target large-scale complacency with war. When these two tie together is where the book derives its tension and strength

The Book We Needed Before 9/11

In Jonathan Schell’s The Military Half, he discusses how the U.S. army used language to dampen the awful violence they were inflicting on Vietnamese civilians. “Hootch” was slang for a Vietnamese house. The more proper military term for a Vietnamese person’s home was a “structure.” It’s fun to burn a hootch; a duty to bomb a structure; unbearable to destroy someone’s home. The language desensitized the soldiers, so that they could joke about killing children, pregnant women, and the disabled and elderly without facing reality.

My point is that our military’s issue with language goes way back. Words matter – these layers of euphemisms make way for real violence that harms real people. Solmaz Sharif offers a creative way to think about the effect that language has. She takes the words out of the perpetrators’ mouths and flings them back; she carves those words open and exposes the awful truths that lie inside.

In “Inspiration Point, Berkeley,” she starts with, “Consider Kissinger: / the honorary Globetrotter / of Harlem who spins on fingertip / the world as balloon, the buffoon / erected and be-plaqued here … ” We honor a man with the blood of millions on his hands, and she compares this ingeniously to how “the conquistadors dropped /armored mission after armored mission after saints - / Luis Obispo, Francisco, etc.”

Later in “Dependers/Immediate Family,” she discusses the violent hypermasculinity that parents instill in their (male) children, preparing them for war from the start, because they’ve been convinced that’s the honorable, patriotic way to raise a kid: “At the WWII Memorial, FDR thanks women / for sacrificing their sons / and their nylons.” And later: “Your crib, your teddy bears, / I want to say mother put a GUN / there, blocks and blocks of boys / with pistols in their lunch pails.”

I have become convinced of the urgent importance of war poetry – of poems that expose or explore meaningful, tangible topics – of poems that offer new lenses through which to view these topics. Solmaz Sharif gives us new tools for thinking about U.S. presence in the Middle East, and what it means when a military can't use words that have direct meaning. I wish this collection had been available to us years ago.

Like all art that's truly haunted me

5 stars, 500 stars, the whole of the Milky Way. I've never read a collection so conceptually well executed while so emotionally devastating. These poems are moving, eviscerating; they are lamentations, catalogs of both brutality and intimacy. Like all art that's truly haunted me, these poems made me upset, uncomfortable for what they make me question in my own presumptions and views. Calling a book 'important' feels like such a cliche these days, but this book is.

About the Author

John Pinel, the author of Biopsychology, obtained his PhD from McGill University in Montreal. He worked briefly at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before taking up his current position at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Professor Pinel is an award-winning teacher and the author of over 200 scientific papers; however, he feels that Biopsychology is his major career-related accomplishment. “It ties together everything that I love about my job: students, teaching, writing, and research.”

 

When asked about his personal interests, Professor Pinel speaks glowingly of his partner, Maggie, and son, Greg. The high quality of the illustrations in Biopsychology is largely attributable to the effort and talents of Maggie, who is an artist and technical writer. Greg is currently completing his PhD at the London School of Economics, specializing in social and educational programs for indigenous peoples.

 

“I get most of my exercise by rehearsing and performing West African drum rhythms,” Professor Pinel says. “For a peak mental and physical experience, a bit of Kpanlogo with my friend, Nigerian drum master Kwasi Iruoje is hard to beat.” Most of Professor Pinel’s relaxation comes from cuddling his cats, Sambala, Rastaman, and Squeak.

Great Accompaniment

I purchased this book as a companion to John P. J. Pinel's Biopsycholgoy (8th edition) for a class. This workbook was not required, but I found it very helpful for two reasons:

1. I have never taken a class involving neuroscience of any kind, and I knew that these concepts would be difficult for me to fully understand. This workbook broke down the parts of the human nervous system in a way that made it simple and straightforward.
2. I found it exceedingly comforting and relaxing to simply color. I enjoyed choosing what colors to use, shading in the appropriate shapes, while simultaneously learning. This subject matter can be intimidating for some, and stressful for others, and the act of coloring removes some of these boundaries.

The workbook also acts as a study guide...there is a back flap that is designed to cover over the names of the structures, and you can go back and test yourself without peeking. The facing page of each coloring diagram includes a brief overview of the specific elements you are coloring and how they relate to one another. These descriptions are very brief summaries which provide a good reinforcement of what you learned from whatever textbook you are using (assuming you are in a class on biopsychology, neuropsychology, or a biology class about the nervous system).

I would recommend this book to anyone who feels that they need some extra help in understanding the complex structures of the human nervous system.

This is a good book for someone who knows next to nothing about neuroanatomy but if you have at least a basic working knowledge of the brain then this book is not for you. I'd suggest going for the popular competitor. I'm a Neuroscience Undergrad and wanted a simple neuroanatomy coloring book to pass the time and seal in anatomical structures but this book was overly simplistic. I ordered the competitor and am much happier with that purchase. HOWEVER, if you are new to the world of neuroanatomy I think this book will be a solid buy - it gives clear descriptions and the drawings are not complicated. It is for that reason I give it 4 stars. It would be 5 but some of the enlargements for the pictures looked distorted which made the book seem "cheap", other than that, for a neuroanatomy novice/beginner - this is a good book, but if you have already learned a thing or two about the brain, go with the competitor.

Great balance between education and fun with coloring.

I bought this as a gift to my adult daughter. She had requested it as it's both educational and fun. She tells me she likes that there are some aspects of this book that get into psychology. She can also appreciate the many drawings that she can color when she just needs a break from the educational. The paper feels like it's high quality. What I did read was written at a level I could understand. I have no medical expertise. Based on what I've seen and felt myself along with her comments to me...I can recommend this book.
