Perfect for the new teacher

I just finished my teacher education program in Toronto and this book was an excellent read as I make the transition from student teacher to teacher. It is well researched and yet very readable with many relevant stories. John Loughran shares his personal insight and backs up many of his ideas with research and real-life practical examples.

I felt like the book helped make sense of many of the pedagogies and strategies discussed in teacher's college, but for some reason his book brings the ideas to life.

If you are looking for some good advice and a new reference for good teaching strategies to implement and bring into your classroom this book is ideal. Even experienced teachers will find some useful ideas.

This book is ok... I really wish that it was spiral bound. I also really wish that the radiograph they are referencing to was on the same page; it's difficult and confusing to have to flip back and forth. Really, each radiograph should have had it's own page with the description, even if it meant adding more pages. Also, the book is too small and flimsy.

This textbook is a great review for the practitioner and study aide for the student. The oral pathology section shows in great detail the descriptions to look for in any radiograph. But I never discount the section on normal landmarks since many of my student and myself always need to review these items to make sure we do a complete professional service for our dental patients. When redoing the text for the next edition, a second color might be nice and a longer section on quizzes, possibly with some case histories?

Larry Niven is the award-winning author of the Ringworld series, along with many other science fiction masterpieces, and fantasy novels including the Magic Goes Away series. His Beowulf's Children, co-authored with Jerry Pournelle and Steven Barnes, was a New York Times bestseller. He has received the Nebula Award, five Hugos, four Locus Awards, two Ditmars, the Prometheus, and the Robert A. Heinlein Award, among other honors. He lives in Chatsworth, California.

Catching Up

Larry Niven's candour about his writing and his frequent references to his own work mean the fan and scholar have an easy and fun time reading his works and tracing them back to their sources and seeing how they all link together. The problem for readers outside the US is tracking down where these stories appear. So it's great when a collection like this comes along. The previous three, N-Space, ,Playrounds of the Mind and Scatterbrain offered a thorugh retrospective of Niven's writing career up to just before the publication of Ringworld's Children, his last solo novel, and Stars and Gods picks up the bibliography from there.

In and around the stories and excerpts from novels are little introductory pieces by Niven giving you the ral-life background or literary environment in which the piece belongs and sometimes these intros explain a point that might be a bit obscure in the text. Like most Niven they're worth pondering a bit and you get nice aphorims about the writing craft, too. Plus the introductions and afterwords are what's it all about--they're the written equivalent of a DVD commentary.

My personal highlight is "The Gatherers' Guild". Niven says this is his best conspiracy story, so if you like the idea that there are not-so-secret government agencies covertly running your life, buy this book.

I am not going to apologize!

For my love of Larry Niven's work. No, I am not, I can't really explain it, as it doesn't seem to mesh with the rest of my tastes when it comes to written fiction. The writing isn't in any way impressive, the characters... Okay I love Louis Wu and Beowulf Schaeffer, and Chmee, but past that? In the whole vast set of Larry's work I can barely name anyone else. But if you find that you like his work then get this thing, gobble it up and enjoy!

Sally J. Rogers, PhD, is Professor of Psychiatry at the MIND Institute at the University of California, Davis. She is a pioneering autism researcher known for her work on early intervention for preschoolers, imitation deficits, family interventions, and autism in infancy. With Geraldine Dawson and colleagues, Dr. Rogers developed the Early Start Denver Model, the treatment approach that is the basis for this book.

Geraldine Dawson, PhD, is Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Duke Center for Autism and Brain Development at Duke University. She served as Founding Director of the University of Washington Autism Center. An internationally recognized autism expert with a focus on early detection, intervention, and brain plasticity in autism, Dr. Dawson is a passionate advocate for families. My son was diagnosed with autism a couple of months ago and I didn't really know where to begin. We signed him up for therapy and we had to go to a session for parents (highly recommend any parent with an autistic child does the same). This book is great because it's aimed at parents and written in an easy-to-understand language. The first couple of chapters go through what many of us have gone through using a family's story of how their journey began and progressed. What I found unique about this book is that it really made me feel like I'm not alone and that there are people out there that get what we as parents are going through.

This was recommended to me by one of our doctors, and of the several books on autism I have read in the last year since receiving the diagnosis, this was the best. I would definitely recommend it.
