Amazing Read - Disappear Into Another World

I just finished reading The Baba Yaga's Daughter by C.E. Murphy... it was divine. I felt like I was in an old library, hidden in a corner with a small lamp, devouring a leather-bound book I found inconspicuously mixed in with the fiction when it should have been shelved with `fact'. Like it was handwritten in script with ink and quill and the owner of the library either had no idea what they possessed or were clever enough to shelve it where it would be hidden in plain sight. The language was lush, the stories interwoven intricately enough to stand on their own but with small hints to broaden the back-story of the others. I highly recommend this book... either to ready fans who follow her work or as an excellent introduction to the quality of her writing and stories.

Off-beat and unusual.

I've read a lot of SF and Fantasy over the years, and this was some original and innovative material, I am pleased to report.

Vampires herein are not the current faddish sort, nor even Lugosi-ish, and the reader was required to think a bit.

All in all, I was quite happy with this find

Audio review of Baba Yaga's Daughter and Other Stories of the Old Races

This is an enchanted tale that has been skilfully brought to life by Anna’s colourful narration. The plot is not straight forward at all but several stories spun together in a delightful mix.
Many parts to the story stretch over different continents and many generations. In it Murphy writes of truths, half-truths, folklore and legions.
I liked how she wrote the female characters with strong leads and they were both brave and fearful. Not meek or in any way subservient, which is often the case in some old fashioned tales.
The two main male characters, the dragonlord Janx and the dashing vampire Eliseo Daisani are both powerful in their own rights and make an uneasy friendship. However both of them are never without a woman in their lives to complete or complicate them.
Being a child still at heart, I loved the witches best, Baba Yaga, and her chicken leg hut that could not cross running water and the daughter who had no name. Anna gave Russian inflections to their lines as she read them, and made them seam formidable pair, I certainly would not like to meet Baba Yaga in the dark.

Anna wide range of voices forced me to stop listening at one point and to check there was indeed only one narrator. How she jumped from a Russian voice to an American in the same paragraph was mesmerising.
Along with vampires, there is an interesting an skilfully written female vampire hunter. I felt a bit like I was exploring a secret world. I was transfixed by the dragons who could take on the form of humans alongside tales of gargoyles and silkies.
Not only were all the magical creatures in this story beautifully written, but also humans characters, who’s lives became intertwined with the old races intriguing and fairy like way.
There were interesting settings, old fashioned speakeasy’s to modern day settings.
This is an enchanted tale, but I am glad I listened to it rather than reading it as its dripped though with long and tasty descriptions, and having them read out to you gives you more of a chance to absorb and admire them.
This is the first time I have come across Murphy’s writing and I would really look forward to reading/listening to some more of her fantastic written work.
A magical listen, Anna has a skilful reading of the wonderful characters was both relaxing and hugely enjoyable. I am looking forward to listening to other Audiobook’s that Anna has narrated. Especially looking forward to her upcoming reading of the Audiobook, ‘Garden.’

This book alone does not allow you to become a "Hangul Master"

Hangul Master doesn't offer enough explanations about the concepts introduced in the book. For example, I was really confused about what "batchim" is and its purpose. The book only described it in a few sentences, so I had to look for a better explanation online. In the vocabulary section, the graphics next to the words are really ambiguous, so you'd have to look it up in a dictionary to understand the definition of what you're writing.

The downloadable audio is very odd and confusing--the audio doesn't indicate what's being presented in the book, so you'd really have to look up exactly what you're hearing. Some consonants and vowels are difficult to differentiate based on sound, so the book needs to indicate exactly what in the book is being presented in the audio.

The cover says "Learn Hangeul without buying any other books". This is misleading. You will need a lot of external resources to really understand what's being introduced. Using this book alone will definitely not pave the path for you to become a Hangul Master.

Best book to learn how to read and write in Korean

I have been following a website called www.talktomeinkorean.com. They just came out with this book on how to become a hangeul Master. I had to get this because I decided to get serious with learning Korean. Reading and writing are the first step to learning this beautiful language. The book was used but it looked new to me. I have added more wear and tear on it since I've had it. I would definitely recommend this book if you are interested in learning Korean. Shipping was super fast!!

Not for a complete novice

I don't believe this would work well for the complete beginner. I've been studying Korean off & on for years, but I still experienced information overload.
I also wish the audio had all individual letter sounds (ka, na, da etc) instead of mainly words. I'm having trouble with the basic sounds so it would be better for me if I could hear them individually.
I do like TTMIK, but this isn't nearly as understandable as their others.

A must-have for the medieval arms enthusiast

The late Ewart Oakeshott was without doubt the world's foremost expert on medieval swords. In "Records of the Medieval Sword" Oakeshott expounds on his earlier works which span some fifty years of study. His method of classification of medieval swords from the Viking era up to the sixteenth century is the world norm today, and the many fascinating pictures, descriptions, and drawings of the most rare and precious specimens from collections all over the world are a must-have for the student of medieval arms. Whether collector, blade smith, European martial artist or historian, Oakeshott's work is an indispensable reference in the study of medieval arms history. His descriptions of the individual known specimens are detailed and thorough, and make for a good source of reference, while his last entry, an article on the disputed authenticity of a sword of Edward III reads like a detective story. The detailed x-ray pictures, close-up photographs, and lab reports in respect of the sword's examination make you not want to put the book down, but read on to find out if this controversial sword is a fake, or indeed the real thing.

An Illustrated guide to the medieval sword

An excellent book by Ewart Oakshott, I purchased this book as an adjunct to the medieval swords by Oakshott. It is highly recommended with others making a set that covers the end of the Roman Empire in the west through to the beginnings of the rennaisance. This volume covers the classic medieval sword recommended reading if your interested in swords and the history of their evolution and design

About the Author
Brian Mulligan, FNZSP, Dip MT, originated and developed the concept of combining accesory mobilizations with physiological movements in the extremities (MWMs). In the spine, he promotes the use of natural apophyseal glides (NAGs) and sustained natural apophyseal glides (SNAGs). Brian Mulligan received a prestigous "International Service to the Profession Award" from the WCPT and has been an international lecturer in manual therapy since 1972.

Great content, but book falls apart.

This book contains very clear, and useful mulligan techniques. For those like myself who are in smaller communities where courses are inaccessible due to cost/time for travel it is a great resource.

My only issue with the book is the poor quality of the binding. Within minutes the cover came apart from the pages, and that was after only gingerly handling it.

Despite this I would recommend this book to any therapist as the content is what really matters.

Mulligan handbook

I have taken a class taught by Brain Mulligan many years ago. I have since misplaced my handbook and ordered the newer edition. It is a great reference tool for performing Mulligan tecniques. I felt lost without it!

There is a better book by the same author

While this book covers all the basic topics for an introductory book... I feel it doesn't delve into enough detail. Also, the writing style is terse and doesn't flow well. It was published in 1984.

I would highly recommend Lad's more recent book (Ayurvedic Remedies) that was published in 1998. It covers everything that is already in this book plus you get remedies for common ailments. That book is relatable and written in a more friendly manner. He addresses some western aspects (for example he touches on how westerners are averse to vaman/vomiting therapy). Its just $3 more, I would get that.

Keeping it short: this is the only modern intro. to ayurveda that is utterly complete, thorough, concise... well written, top to bottom, thoughtfully organized.... full of very real everyday applications of ayurveda.... it's theory plus application.... confused about ayurveda? want more 'cause you still don't quite get it? yes, this is the book you need.... as an individual's very first book on ayurveda, it is potentially very dense, depending upon consciousness.... if you've already got the essentials in your head, this book will give you an acceleration of understanding...

excellent book

I had the privilage of being treated by Dr. Lad as well as going to several clases he gives at the Ayurvedic institute in Albuquerque NM. The book is a wonderful aid in trying to understand and identify health and disease. You have to be able to understand that "western" medicine is not the answer for everything and that in many cases it will eventually make you even sicker. What do you prefer, Prozac or a cup of some herbal tea that will eventually help you with depression?. What do you prefer, a cup of chamomile tea along with jatamansi or Pepto Bismol?. Ayurveda is something very real, helpful and extremely cheap. Hmmmm..... just wondering why allopacy wants to destroy alternative methods. Even better, is Ayurveda really an alternative treatment? 3,000 years before Jesus Ayurveda was being practiced...so, just wondering who's really alternative. Give it a try, Vasant Lad is a great humble and loving person.
