As a professor of comparative literature, I own several books dealing with this very issue. When I got my Kindle, I said: "oh, what the Hell? Let's give this one a try". I am glad I bought it. It is very well researched, informative, well written and witty. It is clear a labour of love. A very good option for any lit student.

Compelling evidence to support cancer as a metabolic disease

Dr. Seyfried provides compelling evidence that cancer is a metabolic disease (NOT a genetic disease), and this has major implications for the treatment and prevention of cancer.

According to Otto Warburg's theory of cancer, mitochondrial dysfunction is the origin of cancer. Dr. Seyfried has amassed extensive evidence to support Warburg's theory and advances the idea that cancer arises from defects in energy metabolism (mitochondrial dysfunction), and that this metabolic dysfunction triggers genomic instability, activates oncogenes and inactivating tumor suppressor genes. The author does an incredible job at convincing the reader that healthy mitochondria are the ultimate tumor suppressor.

It's clear that the strategy to treat cancer as a genetic disease is not working following metastasis of solid primary tumors, but this fuels the pharmaceutical industry. Enormous amounts of money are spent on large cancer genome projects, but this has not advanced our understanding or treatment of cancer as expected. The cancer genome project has actually created more confusion amongst cancer researchers, and this is very clear if one reads the literature. On the other hand, when cancer is viewed as a metabolic disease the strategies to treat and prevent cancer become incredibly simplistic and economical. For example, animals studies, case reports and anecdotal evidence demonstrate that metabolic therapies that lower blood glucose and elevate ketones will quickly reduce tumor growth, extend lifespan and in some cases cause complete remission. This strategy is effective because cancer cells are fueled by glucose and lack the ability to derive energy from ketones due to mitochondrial defects. Metabolic therapies exploit the mitochondrial defects associated with cancer by targeting glucose metabolism, reducing insulin and elevating ketones. These therapies are simple and include "therapeutic fasting", calorie restricted ketogenic diets and relatively cheap and safe drugs that target glycolysis, insulin and other cancer-specific metabolic pathways. The information in this book is valuable to patients and supported by extensive references. This book is technical (in parts), but the author has the ability to describe complicated processes with elegant simplicity.

I read this book immediately after reading "The Secret History of the War on Cancer" and "The Emperor of All Maladies". These are excellent books, but I found Dr. Seyfried's book to be more informative and empowering because it gives the reader clear evidence for the cause of cancer and highly effective strategies to prevent and treat the disease.

I would recommend this book to all cancer researchers, oncologists and layman interested in understanding the origin, management and treatment of cancer as a metabolic disease. This book will also be an extremely valuable resource for patients diagnosed with cancer.

The Most Important Book about Cancer Cell Metabolism

I am a board-certified medical oncologist with 30 years experience in caring for cancer patients and another 20 years of research in cancer medicine dating back to 1963. Seyfried's "Cancer as a Metabolic Disease" is the most significant book I have read in my 50 years in this field. It should be required reading of all cancer specialists, physicians in general, scientific researchers in the field of cancer and for medical students. I cannot overstate what a valuable contribution Thomas Seyfried has made in writing this masterpiece.

a new look at caloric restriction and cancer

It has been known for a long time that caloric restriction led to longevity but also that it stopped cancer growth, some completely and many partial suppression with later recurrences.

Dr. Seyfried spent his whole career looking at an old concept defining cancer as a metabolic abnormality (Warburg). The fact that our PET scans show high glucose uptake in almost all types of cancer proves that cancers have a unique metabolic abnormality unlike normal differentiated cells. Simply put cancer cells require large amounts of glucose, or sugar to survival and multiply.

The cancer cells have an inefficient metabolism utilizing fermentation or glycolysis instead of using mitochondria for a more efficient way of make ATP energy via oxidative phosphorylation.

Why our own medical profession has not looked into this feature of cancer for therapeutic strategies is also odd.
It is well know that Caloric Restriction stops cancer growth and many nutritional support such as macrobiotics and Hippocrates raw foods all have the common denominator of -- low calories with dense nutrition.

I suspect in the next 10 years there will be more discussions and research on use caloric restrictions, on use of alternative body fuel or energy source such as ketones, and glucose analogues, and ways to disrupt glycolysis and abnormal mitochondrial functions by using metabolic approaches to treat cancers.

Nice collection of anecdotes

I read Mr. Cash's second autobiography, Cash, before I read this one, but I still appreciated the additional anecdotes of the times that he lived and performed in, how he got his life on track, and how fervent he was about his Christianity. You can definitely hear that it is the same voice in both books, and they make a nice pair to read together.

I wish he'd delved into his courtship of June, but that's just me being nosy. All in all a nice read and another wonderful memento for his family.

This autobio is written in simple and straightforward language by the Man In Black himself. Our family has been fans of Cash long before the new Hollywood hit 'Walk the Line' hit cinemas last year. However, this new wave of Cash in the spotlight has reminded us all of his remarkable story. Johnny's simple faith allowed him to beat the 'demons' and live out the rest of His life in truth and always attributing Glory where it was due. June was his guardian angel, if you ask me. God definitely gave him a gift when he brought June into his life. His story is a touching one and will show you the power of prayer and godly people in one's life. An easy read and worth every second spend reading it. =)

I've always been a fan of Johnny Cash and his music. After seeing "I Walk The Line" with Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix, a real desire to "hear" from John himself came over me. I absolutely loved the movie but found to my surprise that no mention of Ray Cash (Johnny's father) mistreating his son was found in the book. And actually, there were only good things said about Ray.

John told with great clarity of the horror drug addiction brings on a person. It was so sad to read his words about the pain of withdrawal but how his life changed when he truly began living the Christian life, along with the help of June Carter and her family.

I heartily recommend this book to one and all.

About the Author
Andrew J. Nelson is Assistant Professor of Management at the University of Oregon's Lundquist College of Business, where he teaches courses in strategy and entrepreneurship. He received his Ph.D. and B.A. degrees from Stanford University and his M.Sc. from Oxford University. Prior to joining the University of Oregon, he held the post of Lecturer in management science and engineering at Stanford University.  Dr. Nelson is well known for his research into university-based entrepreneurship

Richard C. Dorf is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Professor of Management at the University of California, Davis. He is author of Introduction to Electric Circuits (7th Ed.), Modern Control Systems (10th Ed.), Handbook of Electrical Engineering (3rd Ed.), Handbook of Engineering (2nd Ed.), and Handbook of Technology Management. He is the co-founder of six technology firms and was recently elected a Fellow Member in The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE)in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Society.

Tom Byers is Professor of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University and founder of the Stanford Technology Ventures Program, which is dedicated to accelerating high-technology entrepreneurship education and creating scholarly research on technology-based firms. After receiving his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, Tom spent over a decade in leadership positions in technology companies including Symantec Corporation. His teaching awards include Stanford's highest honor in 2005 and three national awards for entrepreneurship educators.

Expensive but very comprehensive

Technology Ventures is a book that I'll be keeping for a long time. It is a bit expensive (it's a text book, so this is not unexpected), but unlike many other books, you'll probably keep this one.

It covers the basics of launching a business, and it discusses legal issues, marketing, and HR in an engaging format.

Who should read this book:
If you have an academic background in technology, and want to launch a new business, this book will be perfect for you

Who should not read this book:
If you are looking for a quick, light read, this book will be too much for you. Also, if you're looking for information about social media marketing tactics, this book won't really help you

What I like about this book is that it really provides you with everything you need to know about launching a technology company. It covers everything, from the conception stage, to the legal issues. It is taught to Stanford students, and with good reason; its a very good book.

Buy this only if you have to

The title says it all - if it is a required book for your class then get it. I got this beginning of 2012 when I finishing my senior year in college. As an electrical engineering major, I referred to my textbooks a great deal. I actually kept most of my textbooks from undergrad (I may be a bit of a hoarder), but not this one. The reason was simple, I didn't find this book to be particularly useful. I took an entrepreneurship course that required this book. This book has very basic econ mixed in with real world examples. It will talk about strategies of a start-up business and then discuss how amazon/google/p&g/etc. do so well. Honestly it is like a blended in version of econ and wikipedia, so not so good.

I feel that most textbooks bought on this site are school related so you have to get it. But if there is a choice, I would go with a different book.

Layout is weird and text is hard to read

Well the layout is a little weird. Not like normal textbooks but it is broken up by main sections then by subsections and I honestly didn't read much more than the 3rd or 4th chapter because of the way it was written. The text is a light blue color which makes it somewhat hard to read for long periods of time. Starts to blend in with the white paper.

The content was dry and nothing I hadn't really learned in marketing or entrepreneurship classes.

EDIT: I guess the 4th edition had black ink. This review is for the 3rd addition.

The book is written in a clear and easy manner

I really like the books because of many of its features including:
1. The case studies are really helpful as they really explain the topics and they implement what's been learned in the text.
2. The answers are provided for case studies.
3. The text is designed for someone who has no Medical Knowledge.
4. The figures are really helpful

I would have liked:
1. The important terms could have been highlighted for easy reference.
2. A list of useful websites in one place would have been helpful
3. Some questions at the end of each chapter would have helped.

Overall, the book is an excellent source for anyone willing to learn what Epidemiology is and how to apply it in the field of medicine to make much more data-based, informed decision. I would recommend to all physicians or administrators looking to make clinical decisions.
