Review
"Engaging. . . . Eller's second volume of Bradbury's biography is ultimately a melancholy and cautionary tale."--Washington Post
"Intimate, conscientious, and triumphant, a truly profound examination of Bradbury's accomplishments and legacy. Highly recommended for all sf lovers and those with an appreciation for non-fiction and literature."--Library Journal
"Eller shows how Bradbury's work in the cinema (and his greatest success there) endowed him with a public gravitas that empowered him as a noteworthy speaker on issues pertinent to the Space Age. How the author of the once fantastic seeming Martian Chronicles could by the early 1970s speak realistically about a very likely journey to Mars in the not entirely distant future speaks, of course, for the acceleration of progress in recent times but also of this important writer's vision."--American literary Scholarship
"Even those unfamiliar with Bradbury would enjoy this volume. Recommended."--Choice
"A thorough documentation of Bradbury’s career. . . . This warm, informative biography depicts him as a thoughtful and disciplined writer who helped make science fiction a respected literary genre."--Kirkus
"Eller captures the joy of creations that new forms allowed Bradbury, such as the intensely visual interpretation of Moby Dick that he wrote for director John Houston. . . . Fans who know Bradbury only for his fiction are likely to enjoy this diverse look at his work and creative process."--Publishers Weekly

One of the finest scholarly biographies I have ever read.
By PAauthor
Jonathan Eller's second book about the life and influences of Ray Bradbury is one of the best scholarly biographies I have ever read. It's a feast for readers who want more than a brief overview of his life and enjoy depth as well as breadth -- a thorough, yet accessible and extremely readable examination of one of the greatest authors in modern times.
Anyone who wants a truly deep analysis of Ray Bradbury should read this, along with its companion volume, "Becoming Ray Bradbury." Both are far more meticulously researched and conclusive than the brief HarperCollins biography published in 2005. I hope Dr. Eller will complete a third volume that covers the remainder of Bradbury life. Taken together or separately, they present a definitive portrait of a great man, and the first fully-realized study of his influences and creative processes.

Bradbury For Enthusiasts
By Al Hence
This is a very well-researched, excruciatingly detailed account of Ray Bradbury's mid-career decades 1953-1970. Mr. Eller (Prof. Eller) had access to Bradbury's correspondence, especially the personal letters exchanged with Don Congdon, his long-time agent.
Following up on the previous volume, Becoming Ray Bradbury, the book traces Bradbury's transition from a hugely successful writer of "moralistic fables" (disguised as science fiction and fantasy) to a significant place in the mainstream of American literature. The first part is dominated by an account of his adventures while writing the screenplay for "Moby Dick" under the direction of John Houston. It also devotes a great deal of attention to his attempts (usually unsuccessful) to transfer his fiction to stage, film and TV. In particular it details his fruitless, decades long quest to see a major film production of Martian Chronicles. The 1980 TV-minseries is dismissed in a single sentence. One of the interesting points is how much (almost all) of his later success was based material he wrote during his pulp to slicks period 1943- 1953. Apparently he mined this material over and over for decades. Unknown to most of us, Bradbury also had a successful career as a public speaker and essayist.
Unfortunately Prof. Ellis' style too often verges on didactic making the book a difficult slog through thickets of minutiae. There is a goodly amount of commentary but less actual analysis. Those with a serious interest in either Bradbury himself or popular culture will find it rewarding. It is hard to imagine many general readers willing to wade through it.

A must read for fans and students alike
By Dan E Richardson Jr
Ray Bradbury Unbound, by Jonathon Eller is the second of a three part series This book covers the middle part of Bradbury’s career, beginning with his work with John Huston as screenwriter for Warner Brother’s adaptation of Moby Dick. Eller paints for us a picture of what motivated Bradbury, what his successes in this part of his career were, as well as some of the challenges he faced. This introduction to Bradbury the man, helps to us to realize even deeper, the greatness of his work. Ray Bradbury Unbound, is a must read for fans and students alike.
